Thornton IL Police Department Thornton Police Department serves the community of Thornton Illinois. The department currently has 14 full-time officers and 2 part-time officers.

The Thornton Police Department exists for the purpose of protecting life & property, and to maintain social order within the carefully prescribed ethical & constitutional limits. Through a cooperative effort we will provide citizens & visitors to the community with professional police services, always with the emphasis on the continued sensitivity to the communities needs & concerns for all. The d

epartment members are responsible for performing their duties in a highly professional & competent manor. Our obligation for service & assistance will be delivered to the public equally before the law, without bias towards a personsโ€™ race or status, and with full consideration for the human rights and personal dignity.

The Thornton Police Department would like to advise residents that Schwab Street is currently closed between Margaret Street and Forest Avenue while Nicor Gas crews work to repair a gas leak.

Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes until repairs are completed and the roadway is reopened.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as crews work to safely resolve this issue. Updates will be provided as they become available.

Please use caution when traveling near the work zone and follow all posted signs and directions from emergency personnel.

Residents are advised that streets along the Village of Thornton Memorial Day Parade route will begin closing at approximately 12:30 PM on Monday, May 25, 2026, in preparation for the parade beginning at 1:00 PM.

Temporary road closures and traffic delays will affect the following areas:
โ€ข Chicago Rd
โ€ข Eleanor St
โ€ข Margaret St

Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes and use caution when traveling near the parade route area.

The Village of Thornton was proud to recognize the South Suburban Emergency Response Team's outstanding bravery, professionalism, and teamwork displayed during a recent hostage rescue incident in Thornton.

In appreciation for their courageous actions and dedication to protecting our community, members of SSERT were presented with a commemorative plaque on behalf of the Village of Thornton presented by Sergeant Patrick Leone. Their swift response, tactical expertise, and commitment to public safety helped bring a dangerous situation to a safe resolution.

The Thornton Police Department is advising residents that Ridge Road between Halsted Street and Hubbard Street is currently shut down in both directions due to downed power lines.

Please avoid the area and seek an alternate route while utility crews work to safely repair the lines.

During National Police Week (May 10โ€“May 16, 2026), the Thornton Police Department extends its sincere gratitude to the residents of Thornton for your continued support and partnership.

This week is a time to honor and remember the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, as well as to recognize the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of those who continue to serve every day.

We are proud of the men and women of the Thornton Police Department who work around the clock to protect our community, often in challenging and unpredictable circumstances. Their service reflects a deep commitment to public safety and to the people of Thornton.

We also want to thank our families, community partners, and fellow first responders whose support makes our mission possible.
