Update: Forestry is on scene and working hard to fully contain the fire on Millstone. They have several natural barriers, fire lines and back fires set! This should help keep everyone protected. At this time if you see burning it’s likely part of their plan to fully contain. Please contact 911 if your in immediate danger.

Thanks to our County judge executive and fiscal court for listening to our concerns this AM. As of today Letcher County is under a full burn ban until lifted by our fiscal court. Burning of any kind is prohibited. Above normal dry condition with five more forecasted days of warm and dry weather ahead, along with lower humidity and some wind forecasted conditions are very favorable for fires. Please be aware of you surroundings and report fire to local authorities. If you or anyone you know is in danger please call 911.

Good Saturday Morning, as you wake up this morning you might mistakenly think we’re in the Smokey Mountains. Over the last several hours multiple fire departments across Letcher County have been battling multiple forest fires. Most of which are contained and while some still may be burning, they're within control. The Millstone Fire is not contained at this time. That fire is very large, and has claimed some structures. If you see fire around your house contact 911. If you’re able try to get all leaves, garbage, and debris away from homes and structures. Do not try to go into the hills to fight fire. Ky Forestry Department crews are working hard to get all fires under control.

We are under red flag warnings, we advise strongly against all open fires outdoors at this time. Forecast show 5-6 more days of sunshine before rain.

Our thoughts and prayers are with The Kentucky Division of forestry as they had some firefighters get hurt yesterday battling a wildfire. We are praying for a positive outcome as one was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Burn Unit after suffering serious and life threatening injuries on a forestry fire in southeastern Kentucky. Prayers to the firefighters, family and friends.

We have had several people reach out about possible fires and concerns due to large present of smoke in all of Letcher County. Currently there are no active fires or forest fires reported in Letcher County. Under certain atmospheric conditions smoke can travel for 100’s or even 1000’s of miles. If you see fire or are in danger please don’t hesitate to call 911.
