Over at our Sun King property, it's all art all the time. Well, not ALL the time. But our staff do everything they can to give kids opportunities to express themselves and stretch their creative muscles. At Many Mansions, we believe in working together - whether that's on maintaining affordable housing or making the best paper bag puppet around!

Throughout the month of September, our Sun King youth residents dedicated themselves to making the world a little more creative. They experimented with all kind of mediums, including:

Using acrylic paint to decorate modeling-clay sculptures
Creating jewelry out of eclectic bead collections
Painting beautiful watercolor pictures that they accented with pencils
Making Halloween puppets out of paper bags and paint

These are the memories that stay with a child: using their hands to create something new alongside their friends. Today their art is displayed at Sun King for all the residents to enjoy. C'est magnifique!

Last night I joined neighbors, local leaders, and housing experts at Growing Thoughtfully, a housing forum hosted by Many Mansions. It’s critical to show up to conversations like this as a candidate, because you can’t fix what you don’t take the time to understand.

Chris Allen of the Incremental Development Alliance laid out the problem clearly. In 1950, the average household had 3.9 people and the average new home was under 1,000 square feet. Today, households average 2.1 people, and new homes average over 2,600 square feet. 75% of U.S. households now have no children. We’re building for a family that, for most people, no longer exists.

The answer is the missing middle: cottage courts, du/tri/quad-plexes, and homes that let young people stay, let seniors downsize without leaving their neighborhood, and let the people who work here live here. What surprised me most is many of the best examples look just like the single-family homes next door. Growing thoughtfully doesn’t mean losing what makes Thousand Oaks special. As one slide put it: a strong community lets people stay.
