Park number 3/30: Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks.

Another key element of the NPS logo is the sequoia tree, symbolizing the vegetation and natural beauty protected within our national parks. Sequoias appear at many of the western parks, but some of the largest and oldest trees can be found in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

These parks, located in California’s Sierra Nevada, protect ancient giant sequoias, including the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree by volume on Earth. Some of these trees have stood for over 2,000 years, witnessing millennia of change.

I went to Kings/Sequoia in December 2023 and spent a few cold days in the park. The low temps were a price worth paying, as I had most of the park entirely to myself.

Walking through the cathedral-like groves made me appreciate the efforts to preserve these wonders for future generations. John Muir’s warning 125 years ago is just as relevant today:

Any fool can destroy trees. They cannot run away; and if they could, they would still be destroyed—chased and hunted down as long as fun or a dollar could be got out of their bark hides, branching horns, or magnificent bole backbones.”

Mesa Verde: Park number 2/30. You’ll notice that the NPS logo itself is shaped like an arrowhead, and is considered one of the 5 major elements of the park logo. It represents history, archaeology, and cultural heritage—making it a perfect connection to Mesa Verde National Park, located in southwestern Colorado.

Mesa Verde was designated in 1906 and protects over 5,000 archaeological sites, including the incredible Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The Ancestral Puebloans built these dwellings into the sandstone cliffs over 700 years ago, leaving behind an enduring testament to their ingenuity.

Mesa Verde holds a special place in my heart as it was on of only few parks that I camped in. I was treated with great sunsets, amazing dark skies, and even some wild horses sightings.

Just like the arrowhead in the NPS logo symbolizes the protection of archaeological treasures, Mesa Verde stands as a reminder of the deep human history preserved within our national parks. These places deserve to be protected for future generations.

Park #1: Yellowstone. The American bison is one of the most prominent elements of the NPS logo. It represents all wildlife and the wild heart of America’s public lands. But it wasn’t always a success story—By the late 1800s, bison were nearly extinct, with their numbers dropping from millions to just a few HUNDRED due to overhunting and habitat loss. Yellowstone National Park became a lifeline, sheltering one of the last wild herds. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the population rebounded. Today, Yellowstone’s bison population is around 5,000. From the brink of extinction to a thriving symbol of the NPS, the buffalo’s comeback is a testament to what’s possible when we protect our natural heritage, and what’s at risk when we don’t.

Pictured here is a herd of said 🦬 in Lamar Valley, inside Yellowstone. Tomorrow I’ll talk about another element of the NPS logo, the arrowhead.

With public lands more vulnerable than ever, I’m highlighting 31 incredible national parks to celebrate their beauty, history, and importance. These places belong to all of us, and the more we appreciate them, the better we can protect them.

Tomorrow, I’ll kick things off with Yellowstone and explore the meaning behind the NPS logo.

Follow along—you might just find your next adventure.
