In celebration of National Park Week, we’re spotlighting one of our favorite wildlife species of the high country: the marmot!

These chunky mountaineers live in colonies and take care of one another grooming, snuggling for warmth, and sounding the alarm when a predator’s nearby. It’s teamwork at its finest in high-elevation.

Protecting habitats like these is part of why wildlife conservation matters so much here in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Keep an eye out for marmots next time you’re exploring Mineral King and other high-elevation areas, and remember to admire from a distance!

Crystal Cave: A Journey in Motion 🏔️💚

Deep beneath Sequoia National Park, the earth has been in motion for millions of years, carving marble into cathedral ceilings and creating flowstone curtains and passages that sparkle with calcite. Crystal Cave was known to local tribes, but rediscovered by park trail crew in 1918, and what they found stopped them in their tracks.

The cave you can walk through today exists because of hands in motion, alongside its geological features. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps carved trails and installed the walkways and stairs that still guide visitors through the marble chambers. It was grueling, careful work, done by young men moving mountains (literally) so future generations could witness this underground marvel.

From tectonic uplift to CCC picks and shovels to your footsteps on the trail this season, Crystal Cave is America in Motion in its truest form: constant, patient, and continuing to operate now for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

National Park Week is here! 🎉

For the next week, we’re celebrating everything that makes Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks so extraordinary- towering sequoia groves, rugged wilderness, and the wildlife that calls these mountains home. 🌲🏔️

This is a week to explore, learn, and reconnect with the wild places that belong to all of us. Whether you’re planning a visit, diving into our Field Institute programs, or simply sharing your favorite park memory, we want you along for the celebration.

These parks have been protected for future generations because people like you choose to show up for them, year after year. 💚

We’re thrilled to welcome Dacher Keltner as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Dark Sky Festival!

Join us Saturday, September 13, at Lodgepole Amphitheater for his keynote address, “The New Science of Awe.” Dacher will explore what happens in our minds and bodies when we experience awe, and why “wild awe” found in nature might be one of its most powerful forms. He’ll also guide us through simple, practical exercises to bring more wonder into everyday life. 🌲🏔️

A UC Berkeley psychology professor and Faculty Director of the Greater Good Science Center, Dacher is one of the world’s leading experts on the science of awe. He’s the author of the bestselling book AWE: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life, and his research has even shaped projects for Apple, Pixar, Google, and the National Park Service.

August 25th marks the National Park Service’s 110th birthday, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are celebrating with a fee-free day! 🌲🏔️

No entrance fee means more chances to explore towering sequoias, alpine peaks, and everything in between. But here’s the thing: these parks still need support to thrive for the next 110 years.
