Programs and Projects in 2016:

1. In keeping with our mission, the Friendly Visits Outreach Program is the community-building core of Aging in Community- Three Rivers. We connect volunteers with elders through monthly visits and phone calls. Friendships grow as common interests are explored.

2. Elders are invited to share their oral histories with Story Gatherers for a collection of personal memories called "Dynamic Lives" which will be placed on reserve at the 3R Library, the Historical Museum and the Visalia library.

3. Afternoon at the Movies is a free monthly social event bringing seniors together at St. Anthony Retreat. The Senior Lunch Special is available by reservation. Check the Kaweah Commonwealth Kalendar for details.

4. The Pen Pal Project connects elders and local school children several times each year. This activity builds connections between the age groups, promotes the power of literacy and weaves our elders into the fabric of our village.

5. Our FREE 2016 Workshops focus on senior issues. April 21: “ A Dignified Life: The Best Friend’s Approach to Alzheimer’s Care” at St. Anthony Retreat Center at 7 PM
May 12: "Grace in Dying" Webinar at St. Anthony Retreat Center, 10 AM

Apologies!!! We accidentally left a digit off the Mid Valley Disposal phone number on the mailer we sent recently. Customer service can be reached at: 559-237-9425

We are hearing that the new cans are too heavy for some people. There are two things you can request that should help:

1. You can call and request a smaller (64 gallon) can that will be lighter and easier to manage.
2. If that is too small to meet your needs or if even that is too heavy for you, Mid Valley provides a free service to haul your cans down to the street and return them after dumping. If you are disabled or 62+ and head of household, call the customer service number and ask to be signed up for free walk out service.

We know of two people who had problems getting signed up for walk out service this week but we have been reassured by Mid Valley management that they have discussed this with their customer service folk so there should be no further problems with this.

Let us know if we can be of help!

Hope to see you tomorrow at the movies! Free movie begins at 1 pm.

Our air quality is poor due to smoke from fires. (Nothing is near us, thank goodness!) If you are a Three Rivers senior with breathing problems and need to borrow an air purifier, please call our help line. We have several we can lend out.

We're trying to find ways to stay cool this summer at times when there is no power. This is what we've come up with so far. Please add other ideas in the comments!

IF YOU ARE A SENIOR AND NEED IMMEDIATE HELP, CALL 911. IF YOUR POWER IS OUT DURING THE DAY AND YOU NEED A RIDE TO A COOL PLACE, CALL US AND WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO HELP.

1. If you have a storage battery from a camping solar panel system, it can keep a fan running for many hours.
2. Buy a rechargeable portable fan. We haven't tried any so we can't make recommendations but there are rechargeable fans available from Walmart and Amazon for around 35$, and we saw an 8 inch portable misting fan on the Walmart website for $17.89. (If you buy one, be extra sure it is rechargeable! At least some battery powered fans take six D cells and that makes them expensive to run.) A bowl of ice in front of the fan can help cool you down.
3. Use cool compresses on your neck, wrists and forehead.
4. Stay hydrated!
5. Keep a couple blocks of ice made in milk cartons or other containers in your freezer. If you know an outage is coming, put one or two into your fridge. Try not to open the fridge and freezer until the power comes back on.
6. Freeze water in a small container. Place a coin on top of the ice. When you check the freezer, if the coin has sunk to the bottom, the food may not be safe to eat.
