The Thunderbolt Police Department administrative office will be closed Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

🚓 Officers will remain on duty and available to respond to calls for service.

📢 Background Check Appointments Are Now Available Online!

Members of the public can now submit a background check appointment request directly through the Town of Thunderbolt website.

Appointments are available Monday through Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., excluding holidays. The cost is $25.00, with an additional processing fee for card payments.

After submitting your request, you will receive an automated email from the booking system. Please allow up to 24 hours to receive a separate email confirming whether your appointment request has been accepted. Your appointment is not confirmed until you receive that confirmation.

Walk-ins are not guaranteed and may be asked to schedule an appointment.

📸 Meet the Thunderbolt Police Department Team!

We finally managed to get almost the entire department in one place, at one time, and looking in roughly the same direction. Chief Harley approved the final photo—once he learned the alternative was scheduling another picture day!

The Town of Thunderbolt Municipal Court scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2026, has been cancelled due to air-conditioning issues in the courtroom.

Sometimes, the most important call an officer answers does not result in an arrest, citation, or report. Sometimes, it simply involves being present, listening, and reminding someone that they are not alone.

Recently, one of our officers encountered a community member who was going through a difficult moment. The officer took the time to listen, offer support, and ensure the individual made it home safely.

Rocket rolled with us on Wednesday through our monthly K9 for a Day partnership with the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. We introduced him to everyone on Thursday, and today we received the wonderful news that he is being adopted!

Thunderbolt Police Arrest Man Following Peeping Tom Investigation

THUNDERBOLT, Ga. (August 21, 2026) – A 59-year-old man is in custody following an early-morning Peeping Tom investigation in the Town of Thunderbolt.

During the early morning hours Friday, the Thunderbolt Police Department (TPD) was alerted to a suspicious person reportedly looking through the windows of an occupied residence in the 300 block of Bonaventure Road.

TPD officers immediately responded to the area and began searching for the individual. Officers subsequently located a man matching the suspect’s description along Victory Drive. The individual was identified as Jeffrey Gillis, 59, who is listed as homeless and is known to frequent the Thunderbolt and East Savannah areas.

The investigation determined that Gillis had no lawful reason to be on the property and is accused of looking through the windows of the occupied residence. Gillis had also previously been banned from the area following an unrelated incident.

Gillis was arrested and charged with Peeping Tom and Criminal Trespass. He was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center and is expected to appear for arraignment later today.

Gillis has an extensive local criminal history, with approximately 25 previous bookings in Chatham County.

🐾 Meet Rocket, Our K9 for a Day! 🐾

Yesterday marked our monthly K9 for a Day outing in partnership with the Humane Society for Greater Savannah—and this month’s special guest was Rocket!

Rocket spent the day sightseeing around Thunderbolt, being spoiled by everyone he met, enjoying plenty of treats, and soaking up all the belly rubs he could get.

Sergeant Thompson spent most of the day with Rocket and had this to say:

“I spent the majority of the day with the most well-behaved boy ever—Rocket! He loved visiting Coach’s Corner, Tubby’s, Chick-fil-A Victory at Skidaway, and the Thunderbolt Senior Center. His favorite part was all the snacks and treats he received from everyone. He was so calm, well-behaved, and simply happy to be around people. Rocket would make a wonderful companion for anyone looking for a best friend—although maybe not for someone seeking a highly active dog, because he really enjoys relaxing in his bed and eating all the snacks he can!”

We have no doubt that Rocket is ready to meet his person and settle into a loving home of his own. We cannot wait to see him find his furever home! 🐶❤️
