When fog and clouds roll over the hills of Angel Island, we get a glimpse of what this immigrant may have been looking at when he was detained in the barracks about 100 years ago. See the original poem that he carved into the walls at the Detention Barracks Museum...
Low clouds roll over a hillside at Angel Island. The following poem is superimposed on top of the video:

牢騷滿腹甚難休
默默沉沉祇自憂
時望山前云霧鎖
恰似更加一點愁
香山流蕩子題

My belly is so full of discontent it is really difficult to relax.
I can only worry silently to myself.
At times I gaze at the cloud- and fog-enshrouded mountain-front.
It only deepens my sadness.

Floyd come home! Did you know the coyote that swam to Alcatraz Island came from Angel Island State Park?!

Floyd come home! Did you know the coyote that swam to Alcatraz Island came from Angel Island State Park?!

Some of you might have read about the coyote that swam to Alcatraz earlier this year. He is not on the island anymore and we don't know where he is, but a couple of mysteries surrounding the animal have been solved: he was a boy from Angel Island State Park.

You can read all the details in the news release on our website.

Some people named the coyote ‘Floyd’ after Floyd Hamilton, an Alcatraz prisoner who swam back to the island after a failed escape attempt. With new DNA information we gleaned from the coyote’s p**p (yeah, we did that) maybe a better namesake is former prisoner John Giles who managed to escape from Alcatraz to Angel Island in 1945. We might not ever know what happened to the coyote but maybe, just maybe, he swam back home.

Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced that the Angel Island Immigration Station has been named to their list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2026. After the site was previously included on this list in 1999, Angel Island State Park and the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation partnered to restore the detention barracks and hospital building and opened new areas to the public.

Today, the site faces a unique combination of physical, environmental and economic challenges. Significant financial investment is needed to protect and maintain Angel Island’s historic buildings, continue and expand public-facing programs, raise public awareness, and improve access for visitors.
