We were so glad to have Pam Green from the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin join us at our April meeting. Kiwanis Club of Tiffin is a service organization formed in 1928 with a focus on serving our community and supporting the exchange of business.

One of the largest projects the club undertook was involvement in providing affordable housing for senior citizens through the building of the Kiwanis Manor. The facility opened on February 4, 1972, and has made an enormous impact on our seniors, even to the present time.

Kiwanis Club Youth Services includes birthday bags for foster children that have party supplies, gift cards, and a birthday cake from McDonald’s. The BUG program (Bringing Up Grades) provides an ice party for school children that have made improvements in their grades. Project Noelle and Easter baskets are provided for children in crisis, and the club is looking into a Christmas project to benefit children in need. They also provided the Teen Center in downtown Tiffin with snacks and games and had a Thanksgiving dinner at the facility. Kiwanis Club provides the Great A celebration for 4 H members with a fair dinner. Teens also enjoy games, puzzles, drinks and snacks at Bailiwicks that the club sponsors with an ongoing gift card at Bailiwicks. The Kiwanis Club also provides “Chemo Bags” at Mercy Hospital for those undergoing treatment that include a blanket, hand lotion, gum, and many other helpful items. The club conducts the Operation Evergreen project that sends holiday ornaments for military members. There are many other programs the club provides that are very important to both children and adults in the community.
Some of the Kiwanis Club’s fund-raising events include Valentine’s Cooking, 50/50 Raffles, Gift baskets, and a Garage Sale that is held at the August Flea Market at the Seneca County Fairgrounds.

For information on joining the Kiwanis Club you can contact them at 419-448-4541, Email: [email protected] and their website is tiffinkiwanis.org. The club also has a page at Tiffin Kiwanis Club. Kellie Hartsel, President, presented the Kiwanis Club with a monetary donation.

Thank you to Amy Kinney, Executive Director and Marrisa Orzechowski, Community Outreach Coordinator from First Step Domestic Violence Services presented for presenting to us at our meeting in March!

First Step’s mission is to provide safety, shelter, and services to victims of domestic violence through community resources and collaboration. They serve men, women and children in Seneca, Wood, Wyandot, and Sandusky counties and are based out of Fostoria. Since 1980 First Step has provided victims of domestic violence and their children with shelter, a 24-hour support line, advocacy, and outreach and support programs.

The First Step shelter provides a home-like atmosphere with communal living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, laundry room, playroom and bathrooms. There is a secure outdoor playground with 365-degree cameras on the exterior and resident doors are electronically secured. First Step services include: shelter, 24/7 Hotline support, court accompaniment and advocacy. They provide a licensed counselor on site, life skills support, and Safe at Home Program.

Other services provided are a therapy dog, outreach program, housing assistance and education. First Step’s Employer Outreach Program is designed to equip HR and management personnel with the knowledge, tools, and resources necessary to effectively support employees who may be experiencing abuse or secondary trauma. First Step accepts donations of items which are listed on the page. TWIA President Kellie Hartsel presented First Step with a monetary donation.

Thank you, Detective Lieutenant Mark Marquis from the Police Department (Ohio) for joining us earlier this year! He spoke about the complete rebuilding of an old equipment storage room into a soft interview room to be used for victims of violent offenses. The previous room was cold and stark – the same room that was being used to interrogate criminals. They wanted something that would allow the victims to feel more comfortable. The new room will have a more home-like feel. Previously, they were transporting victims out of town so they would have a better experience, which was taking up a lot of extra time. Now, they will be able to perform the interviews right here in Tiffin. They have also been able to update some of their equipment, making it an all-around better experience for everyone involved. TWIA was proud to support this cause!

We're playing catch-up this month on what we've been up to and who has been with us at our monthly meetings!

In December, we were very fortunate to have Capt. Jimmy Hughes with the The Salvation Army Tiffin Citadel as our guest speaker again. Capt. Hughes reported that the Salvation Army could use donations, volunteers, etc. Donations are accepted on Tuesdays and Fridays (except for November & December when their donation rooms are filled with Christmas gifts). Food and hygiene items are accepted year-round. Hygiene items are not covered by food stamps. If anyone would like to ring the bell they can call 419-447-2252 to schedule a time. Lunches are served Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:30-12:30. Volunteers are needed to help with lunch.

Hughes also shared statistics from 2024:
• 18,163 in Utility Assistance
• 4,593 Hot Meals
• 1,680 Food Bundles
• Over 2,000 Social Work Cases

Also at the December meeting, Peggy Wolf (now past president) announced that TWIA’s membership raised $550 towards Amy Recker’s Christmas Angels Project, a grass roots effort to bring gifts and Christmas joy to local children in need at the holidays. With this donation, TWIA purchased Seneca Starvue theatre gift cards to go towards children’s Christmas gifts this year. Thank you to all members who participated and donated to this great cause!
