On Sundays we deep clean both stations. This includes polishing both of our firehouse poles. Not many departments still have functioning poles. It’s estimated about 5-10% of departments in the USA still have functioning poles.

The story of firehouse poles dates back to the 19th century, and they were invented as a way to help firefighters respond to emergencies more quickly.
Before the invention of firehouse poles, firefighters had to run down stairs to reach the fire trucks in the basement of the firehouse. This process took time and was inefficient, especially when every second counted during an emergency. The idea for a firehouse pole came from a fire chief in the 1870s, who realized that a vertical slide or pole could help firefighters get from the upper floors of the firehouse to the ground floor much faster.
The invention is generally credited to J. M. D. (James) Brown, the chief of the New York City Fire Department. He installed the first firehouse pole in 1878 in a firehouse on Bleecker Street in Manhattan.
The pole allowed firefighters to quickly descend to the apparatus floor where their apperatus were stationed. It was a game-changer because it drastically reduced the time it took to get into action.
The firehouse pole itself was typically made of metal or wood and installed in the center of a firehouse.
Firefighters would slide down it, often in their uniforms, straight from the upper levels where they rested or worked on other tasks. These poles became a hallmark of firehouses across the United States and other parts of the world.
Interestingly, the firehouse pole also became a bit of a cultural icon, especially in the early 20th century, due to its association with the speed and efficiency of firefighters. The image of a firefighter sliding down the pole became a symbol of both heroic action and a bit of adventure, as it is quite a dramatic way to start an emergency response.

Get To Know Your Tiffin Firefighters

Meet Captain Mike Steyer

Today, Captain Steyer celebrates 27 years on the job. Join us in thanking him for his dedication and service to the community.

To get to know him a little better, we asked Captain Steyer a few questions.

1. What inspired you to become a firefighter?

I wouldn’t say I was inspired…… I was a senior in high school and didn’t know what I wanted to do. I never thought about being a firefighter, I thought they were just some special type of person or hero. As I started thinking about it I thought, why not me? Fast-forward to nine months after I graduated, I was Tiffin‘s newest and youngest ever firefighter at the age of 19………That was 27 years ago in 1998😳

2. What is your favorite firehouse ritual/ tradition?

My favorite thing at the firehouse is just messing with each other. It is very similar to how you treat siblings. You know, right on the edge of each other’s nerves. Believe it or not, it takes just as much time and training to keep up with the quick witted humor around here as it does to be a firefighter. We have had some of the quickest witted people here that I have ever met. Jim Frederick sticks out as one of the best, you didn’t go into a battle of witts with Jim and come out on top. Humor is also our way of handling the stresses of the job so it has its place.

3.What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a firefighter?

Heros don’t get hired as firefighters, normal people get hired as firefighters……..when those normal people display compassion and fortitude in a stranger’s darkest hour, they might become that person’s hero, but they are still the same normal person. This job is for anyone that wants an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. Don’t sell yourself short, find a class and get started.
