During his distinguished career, he served in many roles within the department, rising through the ranks from Patrolman to Lieutenant, Captain, and ultimately Chief of Police, serving as Chief from 2010 through 2017.

Chief Cornett devoted his life to protecting others and serving this community with pride, professionalism, and unwavering dedication. He was highly respected by his coworkers, fellow officers, and the citizens he served throughout his career. His leadership, knowledge, and commitment to the Village of Tilton left a lasting impact on this department and community that will never be forgotten.

“Working directly with Chief Cornett at the start of my career, he left a tremendous impact on the way I police and serve the community today. His guidance, leadership, and dedication to this profession helped shape not only officers within this department, but the department itself. I am proud to call him a friend and mentor”-Captain Ryan Schull

🚨 📢 ATTENTION VERMILION COUNTY 📢🚨

The Vermilion County 911 Communications Center is currently updating our business emergency contact records.

Over time, businesses change ownership, managers, phone numbers, alarm contacts, and after-hours information. When records become outdated, it can delay notifications during emergencies.

Dispatchers and first responders may need to contact a responsible party for situations such as:

• Burglary or fire alarms
• Open doors after hours
• Water leaks or utility issues
• Severe weather damage
• Medical emergencies
• Suspicious activity
• Emergency evacuations

One issue we regularly encounter is responding to a business after hours for an open door or alarm activation, only to find that the emergency contacts we have on file no longer work for the business or the phone numbers are no longer valid. This can delay notifying someone who can properly secure the building or handle the situation.

Having accurate contact information helps us quickly reach the right person when time matters most.

If you own or manage a business in Vermilion County, please take a few minutes to complete the form below with your updated information. Even if you believe we already have your information on file, submitting updated information again is greatly appreciated.

This week, Captain Ryan Schull and Officer Josh Brown attended a VIP/Dignitary Protection Course, completing a hands-on field training exercise focused on real-world scenarios.

Training included close-proximity and in-vehicle shooting, rapid movement of a dignitary to safety, multi-site advance planning, and coordinated convoy vehicle operations.

The course concluded with a full-scale exercise conducted throughout multiple cities, where participants protected multiple VIPs across several locations. This final scenario tested coordination, communication, and decision-making under dynamic conditions.

We are proud of their continued commitment to training and readiness to better serve and protect our community.

Tilton Police Department Drug Enforcement Update

On April 20, 2025, at approximately 6:50 PM, Officer Hughes and Officer Bernardi conducted drug enforcement operations and surveillance on a known drug residence in Tilton.

During the operation, Officer Hughes initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle leaving the area for an Illinois Vehicle Code violation. The driver was identified as James Wheeler (48) of Lafayette, Indiana. A 3-year-old child was also in the vehicle.

A driver’s license check confirmed Wheeler’s Indiana driver’s license was suspended. Following the investigation and a search of the vehicle, officers located over 200 grams of suspected methamphetamine(later tested positive for Methamphetamine) along with additional suspected narcotics.

On January 16, 2026, Wheeler pleaded guilty to Delivery of Methamphetamine (Class X Felony). He was sentenced to 13 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by 18 months of Mandatory Supervised Release upon discharge including $2840.00 in fines.

The Tilton Police Department remains committed to proactive patrol and targeted enforcement operations to keep our village safe. We will continue working to remove illegal drugs from our community.
