South Carolina’s older adult population is growing, and by 2030, an estimated 1.8 million residents will be age 60 and older. That means preparing now is more important than ever.

When helping the older adults in your life get storm-ready, make sure their emergency kit includes these essential items:

Medical ID bracelet
Insurance and prescription cards
Medical equipment and extra batteries
Walker, cane, or wheelchair
Reading glasses
Dentures

Let’s Talk ...911 Calls!

We hear these every day… so let’s clear it up the right way.

❓ “Why do you ask so many questions when I already told you what’s wrong?”
📞 Because your first statement gives us the problem, but the follow-up questions give responders the full picture. While we’re talking, help is already being dispatched. Those extra details help responders prepare before they even arrive.

❓ “Are you delaying help by asking questions?”
⛔ No. Dispatch happens within seconds. The questions happen at the same time, not before.

❓ “Why do I have to stay on the phone?”
🧠 Because emergencies can change quickly. We may need to give CPR instructions, help you stay safe, or update responders with new information.

❓ “Why do you ask for descriptions?”
👀 Because details matter. Clothing, appearance, and direction of travel can help responders locate someone faster, especially in chaotic situations.

❓ “Why do you need my phone number?”
📞 If the call drops, we need a way to call you back. In some situations, that reconnect can be critical.

❓ “Why do you repeat questions?”
🔁 To confirm accuracy. One wrong detail can send responders to the wrong place or prepare for the wrong situation.

❓ “Why are you so calm?”
🧠 Because we’re trained to be. Your emergency is already intense. We’re here to steady the situation and guide you through it.

❓ “Are you the one coming to help me?”
📞 No, but we are the link between you and the responders. We coordinate everything happening behind the scenes.

❓ “Why do you give instructions?”
🚑 Because what you do before responders arrive can save a life.

❓ “Do you actually care about what’s happening?”
💙 Yes. More than people realize. We hear fear, panic, and trauma every day, and we carry that with us because we genuinely care about helping you.

When you call 911, you’re not just reaching a system. You’re reaching a person who is trained, focused, and fully committed to helping you through that moment.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Paramedic Ralph Fulmore, Jr.

This is a heartbreaking loss for the EMS community. Ralph’s dedication to service and commitment to his profession will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Florence County EMS family during this difficult time.

For Immediate Release:

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our colleague and friend, Paramedic Ralph Fulmore, Jr.

Ralph joined Florence County EMS in June 2023 as a cadet in our EMT program.

It was immediately obvious that he was a perfect fit for our organization.

After a year as an EMT, Ralph decided he was ready to progress and began paramedic school. During that program, Ralph worked very hard to learn the craft he enjoyed. He was nervous about taking the exam but excited about the idea of achieving his paramedic certification.

Yesterday evening, on his way home from taking the National Registry Paramedic exam, Ralph was involved in a terrible motor vehicle collision and could not survive his injuries.

Even though our hearts are broken for the loss of a friend and coworker, we cannot be prouder of the accomplishments that Ralph achieved. He passed that exam. He worked very hard and would have been honored to wear the patch.

While his achievements professionally are something to be celebrated, it was his sweet family that he truly cherished. Ralph was a devoted son, fiancé, and father. He loved his family, fiercely and they were his reason for pushing himself to be better every day.

Please hold Ralph’s loved ones and friends close in your thoughts and prayers.

Rest easy friend.

Yesterday afternoon, we held the very first meeting of the Timmonsville Rescue Squad Junior Cadet Program!

We had a great turnout, and the future cadets got an introduction to what our squad does and how we serve the community. They asked great questions and showed a lot of enthusiasm. It's exciting to see the next generation stepping up to be the first responders of tomorrow!

We’re looking forward to seeing them grow and learn. This is just the beginning!
