🔥 How fast can a fire spread?

In recognition of Campus Fire Safety Month, join Safe Redbirds tomorrow, Friday, September 4, at 9:45 a.m. for a burn cell demonstration in the parking lot between Watterson Dining and Stevenson Hall.

Similar to the fire demonstration we hosted during Festival ISU last year, this demonstration will show just how quickly a fire can spread, how hot it can become, and how effective sprinklers can be in stopping it.

Come see fire safety in action. It’s one thing to hear about fire safety. It’s another to watch it happen.

Safe Redbirds appreciates our collaborators who helped make this demonstration possible: Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board, Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and Normal Fire Department.

SPRINKLER SAVE: On August 11, a single fire sprinkler contained a fire in a malfunctioning refrigerated sandwich display at a 7-11 convenience store in an Elk Grove Village strip mall. The multi-tier display initially started smoking but then ignited, causing the fire sprinkler activation. Fire service personnel provided full extinguishment. No injuries were reported. Elk Grove Village Fire Department Fire Inspector/Investigator Joe McEnery noted that the total loss could have been $2 million had it not been for the fire sprinkler and the fact that the incident occurred during business hours. "The fire sprinkler system prevented the fire from extending to the other three businesses in the strip mall, allowing them to be back in operation the day of the fire. The fire unit should be back in operation within five days," said McEnery.
