When you are discharged after a hospital stay or medical procedure, be sure to get all instructions in writing. Have a companion as a second set of ears. Call your doctor's office if you're not sure about a direction after you get home.

"PatientEngagementHIT reports that “despite near-universal confidence, patients are forgetting most of the key information following an inpatient hospital stay,” with one study finding that “only between 50 and 60% of patients remember key information from recent inpatient stays, including their diagnosis and even changes in medication regimens.”

Get that COVID booster!

“fears that the” bivalent “COVID booster shots made by Pfizer-BioNTech may increase the risk of strokes in people aged 65 and older were not borne out by an intensive scientific investigation, federal officials said on Friday.” The Times added, “‘It is very unlikely’ that the risk is real, the officials said.” This risk “was specific to the bivalent vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech,” while “no similar concerns were linked to the original COVID vaccines or to Moderna’s bivalent boosters.”

Talk to a vascular surgeon if you have gout or high uric acid levels.

“High uric acid levels are associated with a significantly increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib), according to” a study that found “this risk was present in both patients who went on to develop other cardiovascular conditions and those who did not.” Researchers also “found that BMI was strongly associated with a higher AFib risk.”

Stay healthy in the new year by checking your blood pressure frequently! Every time you visit a pharmacy or store with a machine, sit down and give it a go. Keep a record of your readings (the "notes" in your phone is great for this) and if you see a spike, call your physician.

Toast the holiday with a small glass of wine, about 5 ounces - and you may not develop type 2 diabetes in the first place! Wine, either red or white, also has healthy heart benefits.
Avoid sangria which could have as much sugar as a soft drink.

It’s the holidays and that means celebrating! If you have diabetes, can you still have a cocktail?
Yes, but be aware that alcohol can spike your blood sugar. Keep to a light or low carb beer and watch craft beers. They typically have twice the calories and alcohol!

AMAZING - talk to your physician about intermittent fasting!

“Nearly half of a cohort of adults with type 2 diabetes” (T2D) “participating in a calorie-restricted intermittent fasting intervention achieved diabetes remission,” researchers concluded in a “parallel-design, open-label, randomized controlled trial” that enrolled “72 adults aged 18 to 75 years diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and taking at least one diabetes medication.” The study revealed that “adults who participated in the Chinese Medical Nutrition Therapy dietary approach that encompassed five days of intermittent fasting followed by 10 days of eating ad libitum had greater reductions in fasting blood glucose and HbA1c than adults eating an ad libitum diet alone three and 12 months after the trial ended.”

When you have diabetes, a holiday brunch featuring a Bloody Mary should be on your "naughty" list.

Take care of your health and keep your blood sugar stable by making it a Virgin Mary - no alcohol. Switch to low-sodium tomato juice and add more celery instead of pickles.
