By late June the yard is full of light, and almost none of those flashes are the same species. Fireflies aren't flies β€” they're beetles, and each kind blinks its own code to find a mate.

The flashers over the lawn:
- Big dipper β€” the classic yellow J-flash at dusk. The one you chased as a kid. Common across the eastern and central US.
- Say's firefly β€” amber, not yellow. A quick flicker, higher up and later into the night.
- Synchronous firefly β€” flashes in unison, then the whole forest goes dark together. Southern Appalachians only, for about two weeks in late spring.

🌿 And the ones that break the rules:
- Blue ghost β€” no flash at all, just a steady blue glow drifting low to the ground. The female is wingless, glowing from the leaf litter. Appalachians only.
- Femme fatale β€” a female that mimics another firefly's flash, lures in the male who answers, and eats him for the toxins in his body.
- Glowworm β€” the larva glows too. It spends a year or more underground hunting snails and slugs before its two weeks of light.

Most adults barely eat. They glow to find a mate, then they're gone in two or three weeks. The light that washes out the show is the easy part to fix β€” dim the outdoor lights and the fireflies come back 🐾

They are trying their absolute best, but sometimes we don't make it easy on them! If you want to attract the bigger woodpeckers this summer, make sure you get a suet feeder with a tail-prop paddle at the bottom. They need a place to brace that stiff tail! πŸͺ΅πŸ˜‚

06/27/2026

The next time you see that flash of brilliant blue at your feeder, just think about the incredible journey they made to get there! These tiny birds are flying through the dark, steering by the constellations just like ancient sailors. 🌌✨
