She has fifty teeth, venom immunity, and the lowest body temperature of any mammal her size. Most people see her crossing the yard at midnight and assume the worst.

🌿 The opossum doesn't dig up gardens. She doesn't chew wiring. She doesn't start territory fights with the pets. She eats the slugs, the beetles, the grubs, and the fallen fruit — then disappears into the brush pile before sunrise.

She's the only marsupial in North America. Opposable thumbs on her hind feet. A prehensile tail that grips branches. And a body temperature so low that most viruses can't replicate in her system.

A brush pile in a quiet corner. That's the entire ask 🐾

It’s time to make THIS SUMMER a memorable one!

Across PA, regional offices are getting ready for their annual Junior Game Warden Camps where youth, ages 12 to 15, can spend the day learning what it’s like to be a Pennsylvania state game warden.

Campers will join wardens in light physical fitness, confidence-building exercises, and hands-on learning stations.

They’ll have the opportunity to go all-in with wildlife forensics, wildlife-capture techniques, woodland tracking, outdoor survival, and all things wild!

There will be six camps hosted across our state, in each of the regions, with varying dates throughout the summer. The Northwest Region's Junior Game Warden Camp will be held on Saturday, June 27, at Butler City Hunting & Fishing Club in East Butler.

For more info including dates, locations, and registration, visit https://bit.ly/JrGameWarden.

Eight sounds after dark and the animal behind each one.

The barred owl's "who cooks for you" call is eight syllables — and when it escalates to screaming, that's the pair calling together. They're fine.

The screech owl doesn't screech. The sound is a descending whinny — like a tiny horse — coming from inside a tree cavity.

🌿 The high-pitched wall of noise near standing water is spring peepers. The sustained thirty-second trill from the ditch is a toad. Both are frogs. Both sound nothing like what most people expect from a frog.

The whip-poor-will repeats its own name from ground level — sometimes hundreds of times without stopping. The katydid does the same from the treetops later in summer.

The short hoarse bark repeated at intervals that sounds like a woman screaming is the red fox. The chittering that sounds like small birds is raccoon kits.

Eight species. Most of them are within a hundred feet of the back door on any warm night this month 🐾

There's only a few days left to register for State Shooting Sports Contests!

These competitions provide 4-H members with the opportunity to compete at the state level in seven disciplines: Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Archery, Muzzleloader, Riflery, Shotgun, and Hunting Skills. Please note that Hunting Skills is a new discipline this year!

Participants must be at least 10 years old (4-H age) for Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Archery, and Hunting Skills contests. For Smallbore Rifle, Shotgun, and Muzzleloader, participants must be at least 12 years old (4-H age). They must have previously completed the project of which they are competing.

New this year: There are now two divisions, competitive and recreational. Competitive members are 4-H age 13 – 18 and are interested in qualifying for the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. Recreational members are 4-H age 12 – 18 and are not interested in qualifying for the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. Clubs may send multiple teams and individuals for both divisions.

Also, the following rule, “Anyone who has participated in the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championship is NOT allowed to participate in this state contest in the same discipline again,” has been removed. Moving forward, members who participated in the National contest, may participate in the state contest in the same discipline. However, they CANNOT qualify and attend Nationals in the same discipline again.

Have YOU seen this raptor? 🪶

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is thrilled to launch the PennsylvaniaNorthern Harrier Project, a new statewide research initiative in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Game Commission and DCNR. The secretive northern harrier, also known as the marsh hawk or gray ghost, is at risk of disappearing from our state due to habitat loss and changing land use.

In an effort to locate and protect breeding territories, we are opening our “Harrier Hotline” to sighting reports in Pennsylvania during the breeding season, May 15 - July 30.

If you have observed northern harrier activity on your property, please report your sightings to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s Northern Harrier Project page: www.hawkmountain.org/conservation-science/active-research/raptor-conservation-studies/pennsylvania-northern-harrier-project
