Mayor Mark Hampton's speech at the American Legion Memorial Day Event held Mon., May 25, 2026:

Thank you for the opportunity to speak today. In all fairness, whenever Commander Suddarth reached out, before I answered the phone, I was wondering what I would say yes to. The members of our legion are some of the greatest community servants Tipton has and as Mayor a group that I'm always honored to be in debt to. The legion exemplifies the meaning of a lifetime oath to service.

Memorial day was given its place on the calendar to ensure that flowers were in bloom to place on the graves of fallen civil war soldiers. And even though modern science allows for us to keep flowers in bloom regardless of season, this time of year is still fitting for this occasion for it contains another way of reminding us all of the gravity of this solemn day.

For the past month communities across the country filled high school gyms, auditoriums, and facilities to share in the celebration of graduation. It is a time of extreme hope in the possibilities of the future. What will they achieve? How far will they go? You see at age 45 I know that I likely have more days behind me than I do in front. That's just mortality. But for those graduates everything is ahead. Its the reason whenever I refer to our students whether in writing or speech i call them our tomorrows. I understand they are often referred to as young men and women but as a parent whenever my daughters names were announced last year, in my eyes, they were still just girls

It is a somber truth of Memorial Day that for a large portion of the fallen we honor today; their cap and gowns had yet to be stowed away. The ink on their diplomas had yet to fully dry. Their future here expired.

Now I would like to believe that there would be a time that this wouldn’t occur. But whenever you have a country as great as ours it is inevitable that outside powers and influences will attempt to enforce their will upon us. And so, it’s on Memorial Day whenever flowers are naturally in bloom and our graduates have just crossed the stage, we solemnly remember that we have sacrificed our tomorrows for our freedoms today.
