Do you ever wonder what kinds of medical devices the VA can offer veterans? Most veterans are aware of the mobility devices like canes, walkers, wheelchairs and scooters. Some are getting really familiar with CPAP machines, eye glasses, and even hearing aids.
Some veterans think, my hearing loss or my sleep apnea isn't service connected, the VA won't give me hearing aids or a CPAP machine. Not true. Veterans enrolled in VA health care are eligible for all kinds of medical devices, regardless of service-connection. The key is if you have a medical condition that would benefit from the device. Sometimes your VA doctor will offer to prescribe a device for a known condition and sometimes a veteran needs to ask.
EXAMPLES ONLY. Ways to approach your doctor might be:
1) I am worried about getting in and out of my shower and getting up from the toilet. Do you think the VA would install some grab bars?
2) I can no longer wheel myself around the house or the store. I just get too tired now. Do you think I am ready for a scooter?
3) You do not need an audiology referral from your primary care team. Just make an appointment. Then, "I have to blare my TV. I know you gave me hearing aids. Do you think you could give me the adapter that streams the TV directly into my hearing aids."
4) My shoulder arthritis is killing me. I've tried physical therapy and they told me to use ice packs in addition to the exercises. I have read that the VA has something called a Thermazone Machine. Would you be willing to prescribe that for me. It looks like this (bring a picture as many doctors might not even know what it is).
5) Doctor, I'm really concerned about the long-term pain meds I'm on (or not on). I've been researching some pain management solutions that the VA offers. Do you think the VA pain management team can evaluate me for one of these xyz solutions? Do I need a referral to pain management or neurology or orthopedics for my chronic xyz pain?
Lastly, a referral to occupational therapy and a discussion about small tools that may also be useful to continue independence in the kitchen.
Veterans, sometimes you have to be your own best advocate.
