A beautiful day for the animals and critters. They enjoyed some grazing while everyone worked hard on storm prep. They’re all safe and sound in the barn for the night. Let’s hope Hurricane Henri isn’t too bad on us.

From a bird wildlife page:

In the past few weeks the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab has received widespread news of declining cases of the unknown illness in birds and dropping mortality rates.

• Researchers have been testing birds with the unknown illness, but nothing infectious is being found.

• According to the National Wildlife Health Center and some of the states where the illness has been recorded, cases have been seeing a sudden decline, which would not be typical of an infectious disease outbreak.

• The sudden decline supports experts’ most recent working theory that the outbreak is related to the emergence of cicadas this year – the geographic distribution and the timing of the illness directly coincides with the arrival of the cicadas.

• It is believed that the ingestion of the cicadas could have had toxic effects on the birds due to pesticides which contain chemicals that may have caused the neurological symptoms of the illness. Cicadas also carry fungi that can produce toxins when ingested. These toxins could have produced the illness.

• In states where the cicadas did not emerge – all the New England states and New York – birds have not become sick with the illness.

• The decline in cases corresponds with the retreat of the cicadas.
