🚧ROAD CLOSURE – WHISPERING PINES RD🚧

Whispering Pines Road near the intersection of Highway 17 is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. All drivers should use caution in the area and seek alternate routes. Drivers exiting Highway 17 should reroute along Davis Road or Rock Creek Road. Drivers from Defoor Road should reroute along Rock Creek Road.

The road will be closed for an unknown amount of time while units work the scene. We will provide an update when the roadway is clear.

When the first plane struck the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, the United States of America changed forever. On this date 25 years ago, 2,977 lives were lost, 343 firefighters rushed toward danger but never came home, and countless first responders, law enforcement officers, EMS, and military members stepped in to answer the call to serve. 🇺🇸

Today, Sheriff Rusty Fulbright and members of the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office attended several events to remember the brave and honor the fallen.

“25 years ago, on September 11th, the tragic terror attacks redefined what it means to serve in our capacity as first responders, law enforcement, EMS, and fire. Today, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office joins our community in honoring the innocent lives lost and the brave first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” said Sheriff Fulbright.

At 8:46 a.m., Sheriff Fulbright and several SCSO employees took on the Currahee Climb at Camp Toccoa at Currahee, Inc. 3 miles up, 3 miles down – a simple feat considering how many first responders climbed dozens of stairwells to rescue U.S. citizens on September 11, 2001.

SCSO deputies, detention officers, and administrative staff later gathered for the annual First Responders Appreciation Meal at Grace Baptist Church - Toccoa, GA. Thank you to GBC and all of the partner churches and volunteers for providing a delicious meal and fellowship.

We were also honored to attend the First Responders Memorial Meal at the Toccoa Elks Lodge. Thank you for another amazing meal and the opportunity to reflect on the bravery, courage, and community created from grief and tragedy.

The task of a first responder can become dangerous in an instant. May we never forget their sacrifice.

“25 years later, their sacrifice reminds us of why we answer the call each day. We will never forget. May we always stand united, strong, and dedicated to serving one another,” said Sheriff Fulbright.

Thank you for the outpouring of love from our community members. There were so many wonderful events planned today, and while we couldn’t make it to all of them, we hope you know that we are beyond grateful for the citizens of Toccoa-Stephens County. National Faith & Blue Weekend 2026 is just ONE MONTH away!! 💙

Join us for a weekend of building relationships and bridging gaps in our community this upcoming October. The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting two community events this year!

Come eat and fellowship with us Friday, October 9th, from 4-7 p.m. at our Community Cookout! **LOCATION UPDATE** The Community Cookout will be held at the Family Life Center behind Ebenezer Baptist Church on Rose Lane in Toccoa – NOT the Community Impact Center. We will have barbecue plates, worship, and fellowship with local public safety agencies, churches, faith-based organizations, and recovery centers. This meal is completely free thanks to our amazing sponsors!!

We hope you’ll lace up your running (or walking) shoes, and join us for our first ever Faith & Blue 5K/10K the next morning, October 10th, at the Stephens County Recreation Department. Registration/Check-in opens at 6:30 a.m. near the ball fields. Sheriff Rusty Fulbright will give a brief welcome followed by group prayer, then the races will begin! We will kick off the 5K at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K at 9 a.m. Runners can choose to complete the 5K, 10K, or both races!

For the 5K, awards will be given to the Top 3 runners in each age group. For the 10K, awards will be given to the Top 2 runners in each age group. Top Overall Male and Female awards will be given for each race. Race day tee shirts will be guaranteed to all who sign up by September 25th!

Williams Arrested for Trafficking Methamphetamine

Yesterday, September 7, 2026, deputies with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) conducted a traffic stop on a grey pickup truck in the area of North Red Hollow Road. Illegal narcotics were located, and one individual was arrested.

In June 2026, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit began investigating Tameka Williams, 51 of Martin, for her alleged involvement in the illicit controlled substance trade – specifically involving trafficking and distribution of methamphetamine in and around Stephens County. During their investigation, narcotics agents learned that Williams was travelling to and from a residence in Martin to various parts of the state, utilizing multiple vehicles and obtaining large amounts of methamphetamine. While returning to Stephens County, it was discovered that Williams would distribute the methamphetamine inside Stephens County and surrounding local counties.

At approximately 1 p.m. yesterday, SCSO CSU deputies observed Williams leaving her residence in Martin. Williams committed a traffic violation, resulting in a traffic stop where deputies made contact with Williams. During the stop, deputies asked Williams to exit the vehicle. While doing so, deputies observed Williams attempting to conceal a plastic bag containing a white crystal-like substance. Deputies also detected the odor of ma*****na, to which Williams admitted to recently smoking and being under the influence. Upon further investigation, deputies confirmed the bag Williams attempted to conceal contained suspected methamphetamine. Williams removed five additional plastic bags containing suspected methamphetamine from her person.

Deputies then arrested Williams. She was transported to the Stephens County Detention Center without incident. Deputies and narcotics agents conducted a field test of the suspected methamphetamine, which indicated a positive result for the Schedule II controlled substance. Each bag weighed approximately 28 grams (one ounce) and appeared to be divided equally for sale. Approximately six total ounces of suspected methamphetamine were seized as evidence. Deputies also located and seized $1,522 in U.S. currency from inside the vehicle.

Williams remains in jail pending a bond hearing with a Stephens County magistrate court judge. She has been charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

“We are committed to curbing the flow of illegal drug activity in Stephens County. I want to commend our CSU deputies and Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) agents for their hard work throughout this investigation,” said Sheriff Rusty Fulbright. “We are fostering a Safer, Stronger Stephens by getting another individual off the streets thanks to their diligence.”

We hope everyone had an amazing Labor Day Weekend! 🇺🇸

Sunday night, Sheriff Rusty Fulbright and Stephens County Sheriff’s Office staff were honored to partner with Toccoa Raceway during their last race of the season to collect donations for our 4th annual Food & Toy Drive! We had a blast spending time with our community members, cheering on the drivers, watching fireworks, and making a difference for Stephens County families.

Throughout the evening, we collected several new toys and more than $2,500 which will be used to purchase nonperishable food items, toys, and clothing for children and families right here in Stephens County. Thank you to all of the attendees and community members who gave to support this great cause!

Congratulations to the winners of our two raffle items! Special thanks to Mike Davidson and Tammi Holden for hosting us and helping sell raffle tickets.

It’s Labor Day Weekend! 🇺🇸

Administrative offices at the Stephens County Government Building and Stephens County Detention Center will be CLOSED Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day.

The Stephens County Detention Center will be open for essential business only. We will reopen for regular business hours Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Please celebrate responsibly. If you have an emergency, please call 911. SCSO deputies will be on patrol and available to answer calls for service.

Sheriff Rusty Fulbright and the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office congratulate Chief Jeff Haslup on his retirement from the Toccoa Fire Department. Today, we had the pleasure of celebrating Chief Haslup’s 44 years of dedicated service to the City of Toccoa!

“Congratulations to Chief Haslup and his wife, Janice, as he steps into retirement. Thank you for your years of service as a firefighter and Fire Chief,” said Sheriff Rusty Fulbright. “When I worked at the Toccoa Police Department in the ‘90s and responded to fire calls, Jeff was always helpful and mindful of helping us secure the scene and preserve any potential evidence. He was always ready to lend a hand to help, even if it wasn’t in the realm of his fire department duties. Thank you, Jeff, and we wish you a happy retirement!”

This afternoon, Sheriff Rusty Fulbright and administrative staff received a donation of naloxone (Narcan) for the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office. Special thank you to Sherry Beavers, Executive Director of Open Arms Clinic, for your generous donation!

Narcan has a shelf life of 3-4 years. By supplying the SCSO with excess Narcan, patrol deputies are more prepared to quickly assist individuals who may be experiencing drug overdose. Thank you, Sherry and the Open Arms Clinic team, for your continued support of the SCSO and for allowing our team to be more prepared to support those in need while on patrol.

Today, August 31st, is International Overdose Awareness Day. Last night, officials including Sheriff Rusty Fulbright, Coroner Kyle Johnson, and Chaplain Danny Yearwood were honored to join the 5th Annual Candlelight Memorial Service hosted by Hope for a Drug Free Stephens.

Along with many families, friends, and overdose survivors, we stood to honor the lives lost to drug overdose, support families affected by addiction, and raise awareness for recovery. Recovery is possible when we come together as a community to support one another.

Special thank you to the speakers who shared hope, Kathy Whitmire and her team for hosting a beautiful memorial ceremony, and the families who continue to keep the memories of lost loved ones alive. 💜
