The first graders who were on a field trip this week said they thought it was summer. Although the heat makes it feel that way, we still have some weeks before we officially pass over that seasonal change. What doesn’t change is that with one of the big three holidays behind us, people begin playing in our local ponds, lakes, streams and rivers at higher rates than the rest of the year.

We always need to stress that as you do so it is always important to wear your life jacket and a good pair of water shoes to protect yourself. These items might seem unneeded, but it is easy to overlook how important these protective items are in keeping people safe. We never hear about how many folks are saved by wearing a PFD (Personal Flotation Device), but we can show that that one item rarely is in use by those folks who do drown. Please wear the PFD if you are going to be playing in and around the water, it cannot save you if you don't put it on!

Saturday, May 30, 9 a.m.-noon at Wickiup Hill Learning Center

Help us celebrate the vital importance of wetlands to our ecological, economic, and social health. All are invited for a hands-on wetland exploration to discover what critters are living in or around the water near Wickiup Hill Learning Center. As part of a water quality assessment, participants will use nets to catch frogs, crawdads, snails, and insects hatching throughout the wetlands. Linn County Conservation Naturalists will help you identify critters and will have microscopes on hand for viewing and identifying samples as well. Also be sure to check out the on-site exhibits, displays, and activities provided by partner organizations. Come and go from 9 a.m. – noon. Free, no registration required.

Most folks already associate the end of October and the first weeks of November with a time to be extra cautious on our roads due to the deer population. What is less commonly discussed is the second quieter bump up in car/deer accidents is typically the end of May. Does are starting to find little "out of the way" nooks to have their fawns in. It often results in accidents that are far from traditional whitetail crossings. We encourage you all to scan the ditches for the next month or so as the does are finding these spots and crossing roads more frequently. You've heard the term: Drive carefully!
