Linn County Conservation manages nearly 30 areas encompassing over 9,000 acres which includes Morgan Creek, Pinicon Ridge, and Wanatee parks. The Wickiup Hill Learning Center not only features educational displays and exhibits but also provides year round environmental programming. The purpose of the Linn County, IA social media presence is to provide accurate information from and about the County

Come check out the new storybook trail up now through July 6th along Wickiup Hill Learning Center's Prairie Trail. Read the featured book, Where Butterflies Grow by Joanne Ryder, as you walk through the beautiful prairie (about a 1/2-mile loop).

Oooh, GROSS! Not!
What appears to be spit on some of the local vegetation may have fooled those who first see the frothy fluid. What really is on the plant was produced by a nymph of a bug called a spittle bug. The “spittle” is a frothy, bubbly foam that protects the nymphs. They don’t really cause the plants any harm and are certainly notable to point out to others when spotted. The adults look similar to a leaf hopper.

"I have said it before and will repeat it again, Tree Frogs remind me of super heroes! It all starts with their toes – take a close look – they have suction cups on the end of each toe. This means they have the amazing capability to climb, glass, screen doors, vines, poles, siding or trees. Then you shift to their skin, they have a built-in cloaking device: they can change their skin color between the greens and greys to hide themselves. Like most frogs they start their lives as vegetarians and then turn into carnivores – eating most anything alive that will fit in their mouth. As tadpoles they breath with gills and as adults they can breath with lungs or through their skin. To move as tadpoles they wiggle their tails, but as adults they are able to leap, climb, walk or swim. Simply amazing critters!"
