We at the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association want to thank the men and women of law enforcement.

To those who continue to show up day after day to do the work so few choose to do. The work that so often doesn't get reported on or gets misrepresented or misinterpreted. We thank those who get no thanks and ask for none. We thank those who give up afternoons, nights, weekends, holidays, birthdays and special events. We thank those who did the work before us whose names aren't read off in roll calls anymore but whose legacies continue to have an impact. We thank those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of peace and justice. We appreciate the profession you've chosen and the calling you've followed.

No contract since March 31st.

Lowest staffing since 2017.

Can't get people in an academy class.

Can't get people to stay.

Our recruitment poster should say "Apply to Toledo Police. It will look great on a resume when you leave in three years"

The negotiations stalled by requests for wage increases have both unions' presidents concerned about staffing and response times for the departments they represent.

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz has stated for the third time in a month that the Toledo Police Department has grown in size. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In 2018 Mayor Kapszukiewicz inherited 618 officers from Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson.

The department currently stands at 591 officers.

-27 from what the Mayor started with.

-69 from the 660 he promised in 2017.

-109 from the 700 he promised in 2021.

The same thing is happening here in Toledo but isn't being reported on. This city is heading for a situation where the services citizens receive will be diminished due to a shrinking department size. We don't have competitive starting pay to lure candidates in and we don't have competitive top rates or vacation time to keep officers on the department. Your Toledo suburbs are being staffed by former Toledo officers that have fled for greener pastures.

The FOX 8 I TEAM has learned the number of new Cleveland Police recruits in training continues to shrink, and more officers have also left the force.

It was nice to see Chief Troendle and Mayor Kapszukiewicz announce the quarterly city crime statistics today. Citizens of Toledo were able to see continued decreases in the vast majority of crimes thanks to the hard working patrolman on the Toledo Police department.

However crimes aren't the only thing on the decline. Since January 1st of this year the Toledo Police Department is down 36 officers and is on pace to lose approximately 61 officers by years end. The city is already 110 officers short of the Mayor's goal of 700 Police officers.

The Toledo Police Patrolman Association and the City of Toledo are currently negotiating a new contract. We are urgently searching for ways to increase interest in the job and give officers reasons to stay with TPD for their entire career!
