After a good rain, take a few minutes to walk around your yard and dump and drain any standing water left behind. Buckets, flowerpots, toys, tarps, gutters, birdbaths, and other containers can all collect water and become mosquito breeding grounds.

A few minutes of cleanup can make a big difference in reducing mosquitoes around your home!

Have an old above-ground pool that's no longer being used? It could become the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

That's why TASD offers above-ground pool removal and recycling at no additional cost for eligible Lucas County residents.

Our team will first inspect the pool to determine if it's capable of breeding mosquitoes and if it qualifies for removal. If it does, we'll work with you to schedule its removal—helping eliminate a mosquito habitat and making your property a little easier to maintain.

If you've got an unused pool that's collecting water, let us help!

Lucas County residents with ornamental ponds can take a natural step toward mosquito control 🐟

The Toledo Area Sanitary District offers FREE delivery of mosquito control fish, which can reduce mosquito populations by feeding on larvae before they become biting adults.

If you have a pond or water feature, this is an easy, eco-friendly way to make a difference right in your backyard.

How do we know our mosquito control products are still doing their job? We test them.
One of the ways TASD protects public health is through larval resistance testing. By regularly testing, we can make sure the products we use are still working as intended and continue to provide effective control.

Science doesn't stop once a product is in the field. We're constantly monitoring, evaluating, and researching to ensure our mosquito control efforts remain effective and that we're using the best tools to protect Lucas County residents.

Yes... we feed mosquitoes on purpose.

It might sound a little strange, but blood-feeding is an essential part of maintaining our mosquito colony here at TASD. Female mosquitoes need a blood meal to produce eggs, allowing us to raise new generations right in our insectary.

Why keep a colony of mosquitoes? Because having a healthy, controlled population in our lab allows us to conduct research, evaluate control products, perform resistance testing, and make sure our mosquito control efforts in Lucas County are as effective as possible.

Tick checks aren't just for you—they're for your pets, too.

After spending time outdoors, take a few minutes to check your dog (and yourself!) for ticks. Pay close attention around the ears, neck, face, under the collar, between the toes, and around the tail.

Ticks can hitch a ride into your home and may transmit diseases to both people and animals. Finding and removing a tick as soon as possible can help reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Whether it's a walk around the neighborhood, a hike through the woods, or a day in the backyard, make tick checks part of your routine. Your furry friend will thank you!

Meet one of the smallest life stages of the deer tick.

These tiny tick larvae—about the size of a grain of sand and nearly transparent—have just begun appearing for the season. They're most commonly found in shady, wooded areas among leaf litter, where they wait for a host to pass by.

This first blood meal is especially important because it's often when larvae feed on white-footed mice, the primary reservoir for Lyme disease and several other tick-borne illnesses. While tick larvae typically hatch disease-free, they can acquire pathogens during this first feeding and carry them into later life stages.

Whether you're hiking, hunting, or working outdoors, remember to stay on trails when possible, wear insect repellent, perform tick checks after spending time outside, and shower soon after coming indoors.
