Thousands of surviving family members continue to search for the bodies of loved ones buried in the rubble -- in the aftermath of two back-to-back earthquakes that struck their homeland one month ago. Officially the death toll is 5,278, but the Venezuela government has said it could be as high as 10,000. Hundreds of thousands are now homeless suffering from the widespread destruction wrought by the deadliest quakes to hit the country since 1900.

As in past disasters, Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo is collecting and forwarding donations dollar for dollar to Catholic Relief Services for this international humanitarian relief effort. You may donate to Venezuela Earthquake Relief on our secure website: www.catholiccharitiesnwo.org Or make your check out to Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo, noting Venezuela Earthquake Relief. Please mail checks to Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo, One SeaGate, Suite 2300, Toledo, OH 43604. Thank you for generously supporting those in need.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is working through Caritas Venezuela to respond to urgent humanitarian needs in providing emergency safe shelter, food, water, medical care and emergency supplies to those in affected areas.

After Venezuela’s devastating earthquakes, Winder and Deivi Delfín dug every day for 26 days to find the bodies of their mother, brother and grandmother.

Kerstin Pakka was eight years old when she stepped into a cathedral in Istanbul and felt something she had never known before. The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit rose around her—vast and dim, its marble columns stretching upward. Candles flickered in the shadows. Ornate reliquaries housing the bones of saints sat on display. The space was completely unfamiliar and unmistakably solemn. In short, it was decidedly not designed with children in mind. But Kerstin did not feel overwhelmed or afraid. She felt a stillness and peace that she recognized, even at such a young age. “It was this incredible feeling of love,” she recalled. That feeling imprinted onto Kerstin's heart. She carried it for many years and many thousands of miles.

Our prayers go out to the people of Venezuela. Hundreds have lost their lives and thousands have been injured in recent back-to-back earthquakes. The death toll is expected to rise as residents and rescuers search for survivors trapped in the rubble across the South American country. Hundreds of thousands are now homeless suffering from the widespread destruction wrought by the deadliest quakes to hit the country since 1900.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is working through Caritas Venezuela to respond to urgent humanitarian needs in providing emergency safe shelter, food, water, medical care and emergency supplies to those in affected areas.

Thank you for generously supporting those in need.

Back-to-back earthquakes left at least 188 dead and injured more than 1,500 people, the authorities said. Residents of the port city of La Guaira estimated that hundreds of people were trapped in rubble.
