Word is swinging around... thereโs a new troop at the Zoo! ๐๐ฟ Six young spider monkeys are the newest Toledo Zoo residents: Mateo, Wally, Walter, Patrick, Javier and Emilio.
They came to the Zoo after being confiscated from the illegal pet trade, which involves animals being taken from their natural habitats without proper permits and sold to private owners. Now in the care of our team, theyโre settling into their new surroundings.
Walter, Patrick, Javier and Emilio are now on exhibit and exploring their new home in Primate Forest. Mateo and Wally will remain behind the scenes a little longer as they continue to acclimate at their own pace.
Keep an eye out for them swinging, climbing and putting their impressive adaptations to work. Spider monkeys donโt have thumbs. Instead, their four long fingers form a hook that helps them grip branches, while their prehensile tails act like a fifth limb and are strong enough to support their entire body weight.
Come hang with our newest residents during your next Zoo adventure! And stay tuned to our social channels this week as we introduce you to each member of the group and share more about their individual personalities. ๐๐
