At the request of our great Tama County Recorder, we are putting this out because we are seeing a sharp increase in residents getting scammed while trying to apply for or renew a passport.

Here are the facts.

Passport forms are FREE.

You do not pay a website to download a passport form. You do not pay a website to โ€œsubmitโ€ your application for you.

There is only one official website: travel.state.gov

If you are entering payment information on any other site just to access forms, you are likely paying the wrong place.

When applying locally, there are only two legitimate payments:
โ€ข A processing fee paid to the Tama County Recorderโ€™s Office
โ€ข A separate payment to the U.S. Department of State

Both of those payments are handled properly through the Recorderโ€™s Office.

We recently had another resident pay $125 to a third party website before ever coming into the office. That money did not go where they thought it did.

If you are unsure, stop and call the Tama County Recorderโ€™s Office before paying anything online.

Please share this post. The more people who see it, the fewer people will be taken advantage of.
