For a brief moment, Toledo became national news. Then, like countless communities before us, it became another headline and another blip on a screen. The coverage will always fade. What matters is how we move forward together. One of the best things we can do after violence impacts a community is immerse ourselves back into it. Go to the festivals. Buy the pierogis. Yes, I said pierogis! Support the local artist. Tour a historic home. Dance to the music. Meet new people. Make new friends. Make your doctor question your summer snacking choices with those homemade fries and lemonade. Wander and browse through the booths of any local businesses, engage with first responders, and support the people who continue investing in our community every day at every festival or event.

Community safety has never rested solely on the shoulders of those sworn or elected to serve. It belongs to all of us. Being the eyes and ears of our neighborhoods and events remains one of the most effective tools we have. If you see something, say something. It is not the ultimate solution, but it is a good place to start. Leadership is not always found behind a badge, a podium, or an elected office. More often, it is found in ordinary people who stay engaged, support one another, listen to different perspectives, and refuse to quit on their community. That is the momentum we need to maintain and a good compass for any leader.

Yesterday offered a glimpse of what that momentum looks like in action. I had the privilege of joining fellow members of the Lucas County Sheriff's Office, members of Toledo City Council, community partners, volunteers, and the incredible team at St. Paul's Community Center for their 16th Annual Fundraising Event. People from all across Lucas County came together to enjoy a meal, listen to live music, support local organizations, and celebrate a community that refuses to give up on one another. Around tables filled with Chef Carm's famous homemade mac and cheese, burgers generously donated by Mancy's Steakhouse, and countless conversations, we spoke with veterans, volunteers, individuals working through mental health challenges, people searching for permanent housing, and others determined to change the direction of their lives for the better. It was a powerful reminder that the strength of our community is not measured by the challenges it faces, but by the willingness of its people to show up, support one another, and keep moving forward together.

Any labels that may have existed faded into the background. What mattered was that everyone was welcomed, everyone belonged, and people from all walks of life came together as neighbors and members of the same community. It was a powerful reminder that the true strength of Lucas County is found in its people. The ones who show up, lend a hand, offer encouragement, and continue believing in one another. Long after the music ends and the tents come down, those moments of compassion, dignity, and human connection are what endure, and they are far stronger than anything that seeks to divide us.

Special thanks to Major David Friddell, Lieutenant Bradon Stuard, Deputy Sheriff Miquael Warren, Deputy Sheriff Liza Trujillo, Officer Brandon Canty, and Officer Richard Hernandez.

🐾Deputy Moby is enjoying summer. He is in the comments.

👟✨ Wanted ✨👟

Once upon a time, a man believed he had a fairy tale plan. By midnight, all that remained was an empty cash register, a missing shoe, and more than one prince charming looking for him.

On June 08, 2026 at approximately 11:41 p.m., an older white male wearing a hat, blue t-shirt, black jeans, and red Nike shoes was captured on camera at Sportway on Angola Road. After apparently ensuring everyone had gone home for the evening, our very own Sneakerella approached the cashier hut, pushed in the plexiglass window, climbed inside, and removed the cash register from the wall.

His grand escape nearly went according to plan.

Nearly.

In true Sneakerella fashion, he left behind one of his red Nike shoes while climbing out the window. He was last seen at approximately 11:58 p.m. walking away with his hat in one hand, the cash register in the other, and one less shoe than when he arrived.

The twist ending? The register had already been emptied for the night.

So after a 17-minute burglary, Sneakerella's rewards consisted of an empty cash register, a missing shoe, and a starring role on surveillance video.

Unlike Cinderella, whose glass slipper helped her find a prince, Sneakerella's lost Nike may help us find him. We also have an invitation waiting, but instead of a royal ball, it comes with fluorescent lighting, paperwork, and significantly fewer opportunities to dance, but definitely orange slippers.

As for the shoe, it's currently the most successful thing to come out of this whole operation. 👑🚔👟

World War II is honored on many days and in many ways throughout the year. However, June 6 is the anniversary of D-Day, commemorating the Normandy Invasion, which is annually celebrated and globally observed.

Toledo honors military service at the Civic Center Mall located in downtown between the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and Toledo Police Safety building. The Civic Center Mall was completed in 1945 during the “City Beautiful” movement and features an Eternal Flame in honor of World War I veterans.

As always, we wholeheartedly thank those that serve for their sacrifice.
