"Drive like you're invisible." That's the advice local motorcycle advocate Jeff Reichert shared with WTOL during a period of heightened motorcycle crashes. If you have a friend or family member who rides, talk with them about some of the most common factors that contribute to serious motorcycle crashes:

🏍️ Slow down. Speeding gives drivers less time to see motorcycles and makes it harder for riders to react to changing conditions.

🪖 Wear a helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious injury and death in a crash. In Toledo, between 2024-2025, there were 9 lives lost in motorcycle crashes. 6 were not wearing a helmet.

👀 Stay visible. Use headlights, wear bright or reflective gear, and avoid lingering in a vehicle's blind spots.

Drivers have a responsibility, too. Take an extra second to look twice before turning, changing lanes, or entering an intersection. Let's all look out for one another and help make this a safer summer for everyone on Toledo's roads.

Five of those motorcycle crashes were fatal.

‼️ I-475 SOUTH CLOSED THIS WEEKEND‼️

Southbound I-475 will be closed again this weekend, beginning tonight, Friday, June 12 starting at 8 p.m., and lasting through Monday morning, June 15, at 6 a.m.

Major traffic impacts are expected on local surface roads throughout the weekend. The recommended detour for this closure is to take I-475 north around the loop to reach I-75 north and south.

The following ramps will be closed:
—Dussel on-ramp to southbound I-475
—U.S. 20A on-ramp to southbound I-475
—U.S. 24 on-ramp to southbound I-475
—RAMP from SR 25/Dixie Hwy CLOSED to I-75 north and south *this weekend*

The southbound on-ramp will be open at Airport Highway if you wish to reach one of the exits at Dussel or 20A. All remaining traffic will be forced off at U.S. 24.

This is southbound closure #3 of 4. One more time next weekend (weather pending), then we will do the same to northbound I-475 starting in July (dates tbd).

Motorcycle helmets are essential for rider safety. In 2024, there were 40 motorcycle crashes. Of those crashes, 35 resulted in serious injuries and 5 were fatal. With summer here, we're seeing more motorcycles on the road.

Everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Here are a few reminders:

🏍️ Motorcyclists: Wear a helmet, find the link in the comments to the NHTSA guide to choosing the right fit helmet. Only ride when you are alert and focused. Safe motorcycling requires balance, coordination, and good judgment.

🚗 Drivers: Stay aware of your surroundings and watch for motorcyclists in traffic. Give riders plenty of space and be especially cautious when changing lanes, turning, or entering intersections.
