On July 13, 1857, the Meskwaki formally purchased their first 80 acres in Tama County. The Tribal Council passed a resolution on May 27, 1992, marking the date of July 13th as an official Meskwaki National Holiday: Proclamation Day.

Tama County Supervisors announced Proclamation Day as a closed holiday for its employees for 2026 as a way to recognize the Meskwaki community, traditions, and history.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon of patriotic music, storytelling, dance, and community celebration on Sunday, June 14 from 2–4 PM at the Tama County Courthouse lawn & bandstand. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a family-friendly event honoring our nation’s history, flag, and spirit—complete with performances by local talent, community singing, and special appearances inspired by America’s founding story.

🎥 Bonus! Catch the documentary “After Ike” at 1 PM at the Wieting Theater before the celebration.
