To the members of the Tolland Board of Eduction and Tolland Town Council.

Thank you for your time and energy during this budget season. While positions and perspectives differ, there should be no doubt that your service is for the betterment of our families, our homes, and our town. Regardless of the results of tonight's vote, please know that I appreciate you.

Watching our high-school once again out on a spectacular show comforts me and reminds me of the saying that "The things that unite us are far greater than those that divide us."

Thank you, Tolland High

My thoughts on the Town Council Appointment

Not every Republican wants to erode the Constitution with weapons forged of hate and divisiveness. Not every Democrat seeks to eliminate individual liberties through overarching government control and well intentioned public programs. The answer is in the middle. The power is in the compromise. True public servants must recognize the value of communication and the productive energy created by respectful debate.

TThroughout my six years on the Board of Education, Mary Rose reached out on a number of subjects. Whether to compliment or critique, her emails were always polite. She listened fo my response and provided thoughtful feedback. Above all. She always wrote with the students in mind.

As a Republican looking for coalition building from our leadership, I believe Mary Rose is a good fit for one of the vacant positions on the Town Council. I ask the Council to seat her as soon as possible.

Letter sent to the Town Council and Board of Education

Chairman Moran and Chairwoman Gallichant

Hello

It is my sincere hope that this letter finds you all both mentally and physically healthy. I understand the weight of what you have volunteered to do. With the utmost amount of appreciation, I thank you for every facet of it.

In a 1789 letter to James Madison, Thomas Jefferson postulated that every constitution and law had a natural expiration of a generation or about nineteen years. He suggested that no generation had the right to bind the next generation with its laws and frameworks. In this letter, he suggested that each new generation would need to make an active decision to renew those requirements. Madison responded with a litany of objections, but one important thread from that conversation has stuck with me. Times change and our governmental structures must be flexible enough to change with them while being robust enough to structure the results.

For at least the past six years, we have entered into this time of year prepared to perform the critical role of developing and approving the Tolland town budget. For at least the past six years, we have done so while dreading the faults articulated within the section of the Town Charter. We have held unnecessary but mandated meetings and provided recommendations that were not required to be contemplated as parts of the whole. For at lest the past six years, we complained that the process defined by the town charter was not the most effective way of meeting our needs.

I recognize that the opportunity to change this year’s process may have passed, but I urge you to not miss another year. The charter process may have been appropriate when written, but times have changed. Do not fall within the fallacy that what is is what must continue to be. Rather commit to making the change that will benefit Tolland moving forward. Create a subcommittee composed of the representatives from the appropriate boards as well as talented members of the community. Task this committee with providing first a list of recommended charter paragraphs for review. Next task the committee with providing recommended verbiage for the chosen sections. These actions will provide you with a seed that the appropriate government, legal, and ethical resources can grow into an undated charter.

The town charter is an important document to our town and our future. As such, changes should not be rushed. We cannot allow ourselves to be stagnated by charter processes that simply do not work for us anymore. We have elected you to wisely decid when to hold the line and when to make the changes that our town needs to be successful. You are our community leaders. Now be the agents of change that time requires.

Take care of your time and health during these busy times. Recognize that disagreement is not a bad thing if it leads to respectful debate. Regardless of political affiliation, we know that you are our neighbors, friends, and coworkers. Your dedication to our homes, schools, and families is simply wonderful.

It has been my honor to serve alongside Jayden on the Tolland Board of Education for these past four years. During this time, I have seen Jayden evolve as a Board member and as a leader. Throughout it all, his compassionate dedication for the well-being of our children has stayed true and never wavered. As Chairman, I relied heavily on Jayden's council.

I say without question that Jayden F Regisford has earned my endorsement and my vote for his next term on the Tolland Board of Education.

Tolland Board of Education Chair Report - Wednesday 15 October

Yesterday I participated in what will most likely be my last agenda planning meeting for a while. As we discussed the business of the district and decided what was ready to go before the board, I found myself returning to a quote that I’ve held internal for the last sic years. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education." Let that sit for a moment. Think intensively…as in to think in a very focused, concentrated, and thorough manner. To think critically…as in to deliberately analyze information to make a judgment. Finally, that is the goal of true education. True education. We are in the business of growing minds, of empowering souls to reach beyond the surface and seek enlightenment. Nowhere is this articulated better than in our mission statement to “inspire and empower all learners to responsibly contribute to a dynamic global community.” I don’t mean to exaggerate when I say that this is truly where you change the world.

Two years ago, I was nominated for the Chair of this Board of Education. At that time, I committed to lead with honesty and promote an open dialogue on all matters. I believe that I have done that. It is my sincere hope that I have done so in a visible way that demonstrates my firm belief in the unquestionable power of an educated populace. I hope that this board has demonstrated to both the observant and the casual observer that we gladly offer our time and energy to the betterment of the district. We are willing to sacrifice bridges for the benefit of the goal. Most importantly that we are willing…ever eager…to disagree in order to find compromise. We are not Republicans, Democrats, and Unaffiliates. We are a Board of Education.

I have often asked the Superintendent and Vice Chair if we were succeeding, Were we moving the needle. I asked not to guide a conversation, but because I do not know. Did we make the schools mentally and physically safe? Did we help create an environment where everyone feels comfortable with being themselves? Did we enhance the working conditions for our staff such that they could use their passions as energy? Have we stood as a protective barrier between our goals and entropy?
While I certainly have my thoughts, in the end the answers belong to the people of Tolland. They belong to the staff that we employ. They belong to the children that trust that we toil in their best interests. It is my hope that those answers are used to describe our term. I also hope those answers are used to set the minimum levels of community expectations. Hold your public officials to the highest standards. To our student representatives. Your voices are critically important to this body. Never fear to speak honestly here. You are the only true source of critical information that this group needs to hear. Dr. Willett, Jenn, thank you for being willing o go the extra mile with a myriad of phone calls as I strove to educate myself on the subjects and concepts that we would face. I can promise that will not stop. There is still so much to do.

With that, I am reminded that there is still work to do this term. So, I’ll end with another quote by Claus Moser….

”Education costs money, but then so does ignorance.”
