We are saddened to hear the news of the passing of one of our former Chiefs, John E. Hunt Sr. John was born April 3rd, 1944. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in the early 1960’s right out of high school and established a distinguished record of service that included overseas duty in Germany and 2 tours of combat duty in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade & the 5th Special Forces Group. After retirement from the Army, John began his career in law enforcement around 1985.

John’s law enforcement journey brought him through many different law enforcement agencies including: four different Sheriff’s Offices, two college police departments, four different municipal police departments, as well as a stint with a state regulatory agency.

John, having previously served on the economic development board for our city, was first hired by our department in May of 2011. By November of that same year, he was promoted to Chief of Police, and served in that capacity until March of 2014, when he stepped down to reserve status, and continued to serve under the leadership of his successor. John resigned from TBPD in January of 2017 after having served this community for a combined total of 5 years and 8 months.

At the time of his departure, John resigned after accepting a law enforcement position with another law enforcement agency. Most recently, John held a commission with the Fannin County Constable’s Office Pct. 3 and was still serving part time as a Deputy Constable at the time of his passing. We salute John, and his lifetime of honorable service to his country, and his fellow man. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hunt family in their time of mourning. May he rest in peace...

After a brief search, the suspect was located operating a vehicle in the area, and the suspect fled as a traffic stop was attempted.
