Tomahawk Fire Department

Tomahawk Fire Department Tomahawk Fire Department, proudly serving the City of Tomahawk and the surrounding townships with top of the line fire suppression and rescue services.

The Tomahawk Fire Department serves a 350 square mile area consisting of the northern portion of Lincoln County and part of the southern portion of Oneida County. In addition to the city of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, the department covers all of five surrounding townships and a portion of a sixth. The department carries a roster of 28, with an additional 4 'auxiliary' junior firefighters, and provides a

n area population of approximately 10,000 with fire suppression services and a variety of rescue services including extrication, haz-mat response, dive rescue/recovery (open water and under ice) and confined space rescue/recovery. The department also offers award-winning fire prevention programs along with fire inspection programs and an arson investigation team. US HWY 51/I-39 borders the city to the east and runs north/south. US HWY 8 runs east/west across our northern border. US HWY 86 runs east/west across our middle portion. All are major freight transport routes. In addition, the Canadian National Railway runs two freight trains daily through the city with 50% of the freight being either fuel or chemicals. Within our response area are one hospital, two nursing homes, five residential housing facilities for low income/elderly, one semi-chemical paper mill, three fiberglass manufacturing and painting facilities, one wood/resin composite siding manufacturer and a bulk propane distribution facility with 450,000 gallons in storage at any given time. Responding to over 100 calls per year, the Tomahawk Fire Department continues to maintain the highest ISO rating that can be achieved by a volunteer department.

Today is International Firefighters' Day. This day honors the dedication, bravery, and sacrifices of firefighters worldwide. It was established on January 4, 1999, in response to the deaths of five firefighters in a 1998 Australian bushfire, often aligning with St. Florian's Day, the patron saint of firefighters.

Firefighters represent a cornerstone of public safety by deliberately entering dangerous, burning, or unstable environments while others are fleeing to safety, embodying immense courage and duty. This action is not reckless but rather a trained, calculated, and often selfless response to save lives and protect property.

Today we recognize and honor our very own Tomahawk Fire Department Firefighters for their
continuous dedication. Thank you for all you do for the Tomahawk Community!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of our friend and brother Bruce Hedrington.

Bruce was a retired Deputy Chief from Beloit Fire Department and was the MABAS Southwest regional coordinator in Wisconsin.

Bruce was a regular at the Tomahawk Fire School, at one time teaching a class hooked up to an IV, putting the class before his own health.

In recent years, Bruce was a strong proponent of the MABAS system, devoting time to train fire and dispatch personnel in our area.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bruce Hedrington and his family.
Bruce was a retired Deputy Chief of Beloit, Wi. Fire Department, the SW Regional Coordinator for MABAS Wisconsin, and a good friend to MABAS Illinois . He will be missed!
