With the 2026 FIFA World Cup ready to kick off, public health officials keeping a close eye on rare diseases like Ebola & Hantavirus.

Ebola and Hantavirus: WHO & CDC Updates and Public Health Concerns
The World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC are monitoring two recent high-risk outbreaks — Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and hantavirus on the MV Hondius cruise ship — as part of their global health emergency response.
Current Outbreaks

Ebola (Bundibugyo strain): The WHO has declared a public health emergency of international concern for the DRC outbreak, which has spread into Uganda. The strain is highly lethal, with fatality rates in the 30–50% range, and there is no licensed vaccine or cure.

Hantavirus (Andes virus): A rare outbreak occurred aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic, resulting in 11 cases and 3 deaths. The virus is endemic in Argentina, where the ship departed, but experts note that not all vessels from that region were fully aware of the risk.

For general attendees, the risk of Ebola transmission is very low, as the virus spreads primarily through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals. Fans are encouraged to:

Practice good hand hygiene and use hand sanitizers.

Avoid close contact with anyone unwell.

Follow airport and venue screening procedures, which may include temperature checks and health questionnaires.

Respect public health guidance and avoid stigmatizing affected populations.
Key Facts

Hantavirus: Zoonotic virus carried by rodents; can cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas (up to 50% fatality) or haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe/Asia.

Ebola: Highly contagious and deadly; spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals

OCHD PRESS RELEASE!

OCEAN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT AWARDED NATIONAL ACCREDITATION THROUGH THE PUBLIC HEALTH ACCREDITATION BOARD.
Accreditation Proves Ocean County Health Department’s commitment to quality, accountability, and public health excellence.

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) – The Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) today announced it has been awarded national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Established in 2007, PHAB administers the national accreditation program designed to strengthen public health agencies through performance improvement, innovation, and strong organizational infrastructure.

“This accreditation reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire staff and our ongoing commitment to protecting the health of Ocean County residents,” said Daniel E. Regenye, MHA, Public Health Coordinator for the Ocean County Health Department. “Achieving PHAB accreditation demonstrates that our department meets rigorous national standards and is focused on delivering effective, high-quality public health services to our community.”

More than 80 percent of the U.S. population now reap the benefits of being served by a health department that has undergone PHAB’s rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets a set of quality standards and measures.

“Public health departments play a critical role in keeping communities safe and healthy every day,” added Ocean County Commissioner Deputy Director Jennifier Bacchione, liaison to the Ocean County Board of Health. “Public health departments serve on the front lines of disease prevention, health promotion, emergency preparedness, environmental health protection, and community wellness initiatives. This recognition reinforces our Certification mission to continually improve our services, strengthen community partnerships, and prepare for future public health challenges.”"

National accreditation through PHAB has benefits that extend far beyond the health department itself," said PHAB President and CEO Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MD, MPH, FACEP. " The accreditation process helps health departments identify key areas for improvement, ensuring they provide the highest level of service to their communities. With this accomplishment, communities served by accredited health departments can trust that their department is strong, capable, and committed to protecting and promoting public health."
