It is with deep sadness that the Ellwood Fire Department announces the passing of Past Chief Robert "Bob" Carncross on March 11th, 2026. He was 88 years old.
Bob joined the Ellwood Fire Department on December 5th, 1958 - serving Active until 2020 when he retired into Life Membership and remained a committed active member of the fire company social side. He is the longest active member in Ellwood's history. Bob served in many officer positions throughout his tenure including serving as the Chief of Department, President of the Company and Company Secretary for over 20 years. Due to his unwavering dedication, Bobs Fire Department number " #06" was retired within the ranks of Ellwood with a unanimous vote at the company meeting when Bob retired as active.
Bob was also a committed member of many firefighter associations and legislative committee's, always striving and promoting the best interests of the volunteer fire service both locally and on the state level. In honor of all of his hard work, Bob was inducted into the Erie County Fire Service's "Wall of Honor" in 2019.
In 2025, our Fire Company unanimously voted to name the Ellwood Presidents Award in honor of Bob - it is now known as "The Robert Carncross President's Award" and is awarded to members for "outstanding dedication and service". Bob will be sorely missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. May Bob rest in peace - RC #06
