Reported trick-or-treat times for the town and surrounding areas:

* Town of Tonawanda - Sunday, October 31, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

* City of Tonawanda - Sunday, October 31, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

* Village of Kenmore - Sunday, October 31, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

* Grand Island - Sunday, October 31, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Below you can find some tips from AAA for motorists, parents and children for a safe Halloween.

* Motorists Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals. Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street.

* Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. In dark costumes, they’ll be harder to see at night.

* Look for children crossing the street. They may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street mid-block or between parked cars.

* Carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys.

* Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight.

* Broaden your scanning by looking for children left and right into yards and front porches.

* Never drink and drive – plan ahead with a designated driver or ride sharing.
Parents

* Ensure an adult or older, responsible youth is available to supervise children under age 12.

* Plan and discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow.

* Instruct children to travel only in familiar areas and along established routes.

* Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never to enter a stranger’s home or garage.

* Establish a time for children to return home.

* Tell children not to eat any treats until they get home.

* Review trick-or-treating safety precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules.

* Make sure Halloween costumes are flame-retardant and visible with reflective material.
Trick-or-Treaters

* Be bright at night – wear reflective tape on costumes and treat buckets to improve visibility to motorists and others.

* Wear disguises that don’t obstruct vision and avoid facemasks. Instead, use nontoxic face paint. Also, watch the length of billowy costumes to help avoid tripping.

* Ensure any props are flexible and blunt-tipped to avoid injury from tripping or horseplay.

* Carry a flashlight containing fresh batteries, and place it face down in the treat bucket to free up one hand. Never shine it into the eyes of oncoming drivers.

* Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking in streets if possible.

* If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.

* Look both ways and listen for traffic before crossing the street.

* Cross streets only at the corner, and never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block.

* Trick-or-treat in a group if someone older cannot go with you.

* Tell your parents where you are going.
Party Hosts/Homeowners

* Generous lighting outside of your home keeps vandals away while providing safe passage to party guests and trick-or-treaters.

* Keep walkways and stairs clear of debris and make sure they’re well-lit.

* Serve non-alcoholic beverages and food along with your preferred potion.

* Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before the party ends.

😮‍💨 A busy week or so at the Closet!! First thank you to all of our volunteers for their time yesterday at our successful open house! We had community members, Sheridan Park Fire, Town of Tonawanda Police Department, and Town of Tonawanda Paramedics drop by for a visit. A special shout out to Captain Milosich for his FB live video which brought in some extra people including a new customer and some neighbors! We had a donation of hats, gloves, sock, and underwear from the M. I. Hummel Club. Our friend Larry built stands for the flags we got from the Erie-Niagara Sunrise Exchange Club’s Healing Field. The one in our lobby is dedicated in memory of our TTPD Captain Christine Milosich. We are working on getting a plaque to honor her work. Our long-time supporters Marian Ministries put together toiletry bags for us and our friend Nancy stopped by with a generous donation from the Ellwood Fire Ladies Auxillary and we have some great news coming from our veterans…stay tuned. Thank you, friends!! 🥰😘

GRAND ISLAND FIRE BACK ON TRACK WITH OPEN HOUSE FOR 2021 Grand Island opened its doors and hosted a successful Open House after rounding off a week of Fire Prevention! The week of October 3rd thru October 9th is known as Fire Prevention Week. During that week, Grand Island Firefighters make their visits to the schools to teach and remind kids on fire safety. Firefighters teach kids of the danger of playing with matches, how to stop-drop-and-roll, along with several other lifesaving tips. Firefighters gear up and mask up to bring forth the fact that they shouldn’t be afraid of us and if in an event of emergency, remind them that its important to get out safe. Following the week of prevention, Fire HQ is opened up to the public where we have apparatus on display and resources of other local agencies. Everything from fire trucks, to rescue trucks, ladder trucks, equipment trailers, police cars, SWAT vehicles, to helicopters. Open house includes a live-fire demonstration where firefighters have mocked up a child’s bedroom with bunk beds, and simulates the dangers of fire and just how powerful it can be. Kids also were able to enter our annual school raffle of “ride a fire truck to school” where the GIFC will at random select kids from all the different schools and ages, and give them a ride to school in style! A special thank you to our generous Island Business donors include Fresensius Kabi, Fuccillo Auto Group, Leslie’s Collision, Brick Oven Pizzeria, Island Prescription Center, Island Kids Child Care Center, Blackberry’s Restaurant, American Family Dental Group, Certified Auto Brokers, and Bible Presbyterian Church. Another special thank you for participating in this year’s open house includes U.S. Customs and Border Protection, New York State Police, Erie County Sheriff's Office, Sheridan Park Fire, Brighton Volunteer Fire Co #5, and Ellicott Creek Volunteer Fire Company. Looking forward to seeing you next year! Thanks for making it a great one Grand Island!
My boys had a great time at the Sheridan Park Fire open house!
Another day, another firetruck! Thanks to Sheridan Park Fire for the wonderful open house last night! Matthew enjoyed the fire demonstration and sitting in the driver’s seat. Also, Sheridan Park fire is recruiting! Young men and women, check em out!
Long before I was any kind of government official, Sheridan Park Fire reached out to our group of volunteers and invited us to their open house. They took us under their wing and after all these years, there are some great friendships that have developed there. Thank you once again for all of your hospitality and also your hard work to welcome our community into your house. 🥰 Town of Tonawanda Police Department Town of Tonawanda Paramedics
Thank you Sheridan Park Fire for inviting us to your open house tonight! Also, a shout out to our superheros Judy and Sharon for your time at the Closet table. 😘
