Press Release
Line of Duty Death
Irving Isenberg
12/17/1963-11/1/2019

November 1, 2019 - The following statement is from Daniel Cownie, Assistant Chief of the Getzville Fire Company.

It is with profound sadness and heartache that the Getzville Fire Company family announces the passing of our friend and colleague, Irving Isenberg. Irv was a member of the Getzville Fire Company for 29 years and held the offices of Fire Chief from 2007-2011 and President from 2016-2018. Irv was a part of a state-wide mutual aid deployment to Ground Zero after the September 11th attacks. Irv was one of four Getzville firefighters stationed at Albany Street and West Street, a mere block away from Ground Zero. After being diagnosed with job-related cancer from his heroic efforts in lower Manhattan, Irv's last few weeks were spent with family and friends as he battled until the very end. Irv was surrounded by the ones he loved, and was in the thoughts and prayers of his friends, coworkers and the many lives that he touched over his 35-year career as a first responder.

Irv leaves behind his loving wife, Lisa; his two sisters Susan Boyar, Ruth Lipsitz; his mother Alice Isenberg; his stepchildren Jeffrey Costa, Aaron (Brittany) Costa, and his granddaughter Olivia Costa.

Arrangements will be forthcoming.

"Red" Porch Light Vigil

Our department responded to a fire in a vacant storage structure at 1750 Military road. The structure was heavily involved upon arrival. Several factors posed issues including hydrant location (1200 foot of supply lines across active railroads tracks)access and conditions of the grounds (open manholes and general debris).

The fire was extinguished and all units safely returned in service early this morning.

We were honored to have four members attend the National Training weekend at the U.S. Fire Administration. Our members took training for Incident Safety Officer as well as Shaping the Future. In addition to the training we visited the Fallen Firefighters Memorial to pay our respects. These training opportunities help develop skills that help community risk reduction and keep our residents safe.

A great working relationship. Proud to work with them

Ten years ago yesterday (9/16/09), the Tonawanda FD and the Sheridan Park Fire District #4 officially began providing a FAST response to each other. FAST is short for "Firefighter Assist and Search Team." When a serious fire occurs, it's a good practice to have a special team of firefighers on hand assigned specifically to intervene should any firefighter become lost, trapped or incapacitated in any way. I would like to thank our SP brothers and sisters for providing this help (and for the times we've needed to put you to "work") over the past 10 years. I would also like to thank them for allowing us to provide this service to them as well; it has been an honor to do so. I hope to continue this partnership for another 10 years (or more).

Chief Stuart

Let's Remember the hours after September 11th when we came together as one to answer the attack against our homeland. We drew strength when our firefighters ran upstairs and risked their lives so that others might live; when rescuers rushed into smoke and fire at the Pentagon; when the men and women of Flight 93 sacrificed themselves to save our nation’s Capitol; when flags were hanging from front porches all across America, and strangers became friends. It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in all of us.If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate. We lost 343 firefighters this day and our numbers our still climbing from all the firefighters that caught cancer from this tragedy. lets not forget them

Some great news from two groups we work closely with. Praxair makes Safety a priority and should be commended for being proactive and prioritizing employees safety.

Today, Town of Tonawanda Paramedics responded to Praxair for an employee having a medical problem. On arrival at the patient's side, medics found employees providing CPR and deploying an AED. The quick actions of Praxair employees, continued CPR by Town of Tonawanda Police and treatments by Town of Tonawanda Paramedics resulted in saving a life. The patient was awake and talking after arriving at the Emergency Room. Learning CPR and AED use can save lives as witnessed today. The Praxair employees should be commended on their life saving actions. Thanks, as always, to our partner, Twin City Ambulance, for transporting the patient and medic to the hospital.
