On this day 75 years ago, our members joined with brothers and sisters across the US and Canada by signing the charter to become an affiliate of the IAFF. This momentous decision highlights the forward thinking and dedication to the fire service and organized labor that those members had in 1946. Those traits are still on display today with our current members, we are dedicated to serving our community, the fire service, and the labor movement. #iaff #union #aflcio #nyspffa #unionstrong #fire #firefighter #proudunionmembers

Ice Water Self-Rescue

Members of “B” Shift spent their morning practicing several ice water rescue skills. This video shows how a person, whether they are the victim or a rescuer, can get themselves out of the water and onto the ice. The roll technique will equalize the person’s weight on the ice as much as possible. This allows them to escape without breaking the ice and making a new hole or simply expanding the existing hole. Please remember that no ice is safe ice. #icewaterrescue #iafflocal859 #tonawandaprofessionalfirefighters

Our Story

Following a disastrous fire as the Tonawanda Brewing Company in August of 1913, at which two of the city’s fire apparatus were delayed almost 30 minutes a proposal to hire paid drivers was considered. In September of 1913 a resolution was adopted by the city to hire four driver/janitors and a paid fire chief; a civil service exam was held and on November 15th, 1913 the first drivers began work in the city. Much has changed since those first members were hired, the city has since changed from hiring drivers to hiring firefighters. Each of the newly hired probationary firefighters attends the fire academy where they learn the skills needed to begin protecting our citizens. Each member is also required to have at a minimum an EMT-Basic certification prior to appointment; currently we have 14 Paramedics who deliver advanced life support to those in need. Our members are also trained in many technical rescue specialties and we provide mutual aid to surrounding communities. At this time 24 Professional Firefighters spread across 4 platoons protect the city providing fire, rescue and emergency medical services.

So I just want to give a shout out to the Tonawanda paramedics/Fire dept that showed up at my house today for my sick mom! You were all amazing caring understanding group and the patience you showed during all the questions were remarkable! Thank you for your guidance my moms oxygen level being so low was due to pneumonia they actually thought it was due to covid but her test came back negative.. so she wasn’t well enough to come home and I know I kept stressing I didn’t want her to go to the ER but Thank you for really reminding me how important it was even though I was worried about her catching covid there! Hated leaving her there but I know she is where she needs to be right now tomorrow may have been one day to late! Thank you for being the real heroes in this crazy time! Cheryl Lepsch and the Hunt family

I am gonna give a HUGE THANK YOU to our COT fire department! Our Girl Scout troop had a tour planned at the police station tonight. Sadly at the last minute it had to be cancelled due to issues with an arrest earlier today. So we scrambled! And the COTFD really came thru for us! They gave us a royal treatment with literally 20 minutes notice! We learned about all of the trucks, how they do CPR on pets, what their duties are and more! The girls really enjoyed their tour and their ride in the fire truck! A huge thank you to Brandon McGuire, Jeff State and Tim Price for taking time to help us out! (And for putting up with a lotttttt of questions!) Thank you for protecting and serving our community and teaching our children (and parents!) the importance of fire safety!!
I want to give a huge thank you to everybody we had the pleasure of meeting today for SPCA calendar shoot. Everybody was so great and welcoming to Taz. Had a great time!
Every year, firefighters from around the WNY region participate in the Fight for Air Climb: Buffalo in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association. Firefighters in full gear will scale the 37 floors of Seneca One Tower, competing against one another while also supporting their fellow firefighters who suffer from lung disease and lung cancer. Is City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters up for the Basil Family of Dealerships Firefighter Challenge? Please contact us at [email protected] to get involved! Use the code attached for $5 off your registration. We'd love to have you involved, -Kaelyn
