The Village of Tonawanda was established in the 1820's and in 1856, with a population of roughly 2000 and growing, the first fire company was formed. This first fire company was nothing more than a "Bucket Brigade" using buckets of water to fight fires, so in 1863 a hand engine was purchased. A large fire in 1872 was the catalyst behind the purchase of a light class rotary steamer. The Silsby Manufacturing Company (Click here for Silsby history) built the steamer at a cost of $4,200.00, and after being placed into service in the Village, it was given the name "B.H. Long."In 1884 the Village built a water pumping station, and by 1888 had roughly four miles of piping and ninety-six hydrants. In 1903, the Village of Tonawanda formally became the City of Tonawanda and began supplying the volunteer companies with horses to pull their apparatus. Prior to this the companies pulled the carts by hand, and later purchased their own horses. Following a disastrous fire at the Tonawanda Brewing Company in August of 1913, at which two of the City's fire apparatus were delayed almost 30 minutes due to lack of drivers, a committee was formed to look into hiring paid drivers. In September 1913a meeting was geld between the Mayor, City Alderman, Fire Chief, the City Fire Committee, and representatives from the four fire companies. A resolution was adopted from this meeting to appoint four drivers at a salary of $60.00 per month, and a fire chief at a salary of $75.00 per month. A Civil Service test was given to hire drivers for the new positions. On November 15th, 1913 paid drivers/janitors started work in the city, these men were: John Kruse - Driver for Delaware Hose Co. #2 Charles Gau - Driver for National Hose Co. #1 Charles Oxcel - Driver for Niagara Hose Co. #3 Walter Luck - Driver for Union Hook & Ladder Co. #1 Walter Luck worked as a janitor in the quarters of Union Hook & Ladder Co. #1, because they had no team of horses, he was also responsible for "spelling" or providing relief for the other drivers once a week. When the ladder truck did respond to calls, the driver was not allowed to steer the rear of the truck, only members from the company could. The first call for the new drivers came on November 18th, 1913. A fire was reported at the American Hotel on North Niagara Street. The fire caused $31,500.00 damage, and completely destroyed the hotel. On February 1st, 1916 C. Grover Rech was appointed to the position of Fire Chief, a position he will hold for the next 37 years. During his administration the department will undergo vast changes. The movement to motorize the department begins in 1917 when a 750gpm pumper is purchased from the Seagrave Corporation. This pumper is originally painted red, and remains that way until it is sen back to the company in 1927 for upgrades and repairs. In 1922, two REO Speed Wagon hose trucks are purchased for the Niagara Hose and Delaware Hose companies. These vehicles had no pumps. In August of 1926, a second 750gpm pumper arrives, and with it comes a new paint scheme. All vehicles from this point forward will be painted 242D "Tonawanda Yellow." September of 1929 sees the department's fleet become completely motorized when a 75 foot tiller ladder truck is placed in service. The vehicle is purchased from the Seagrave Corporation, and marks the end of the "Horse Drawn" era.

A new viral challenge is making the rounds on social media, involving a phone charger adapter, which can create electrical arcing or sparking. This can be dangerous for people performing the challenge, and can cause fires in nearby combustibles or inside walls. Speak to kids about the dangers of this challenge, and contact the fire department if you find an outlet that may have been affected.

Did you know that in 2019 there were 169 firefighter suicides reported in the US and Canada?

This morning your City of Tonawanda firefighters, Local 859, along with firefighters from other parts of NYS as well as Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Toronto began a two day training seminar to become certified in Peer Support Training.

This IAFF Peer Support Training is a two day classroom program delivered by IAFF master peer support instructors. After completing the training, members will have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide support to their peers as well as have a basic understanding of common behavioral health issues affecting the fire service. They will also be able to serve as a bridge to community resources or behavioral health treatment when indicated.

With PTSD and suicide rates high within the fire service, this will prove to be a valuable asset to our members.

Platoon B was training on various ladder truck maneuvers this morning. It is important that each member of the shift be proficient in aerial operations for when a critical emergency takes place. While the training session was wrapping up, your City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters were dispatched to an alarm of fire for a report of smoke coming from the kitchen. Today your City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters spent some time training with our brothers and sisters in the Town of Tonawanda at the DuPont plant. Captains Lapham & Sereno along with FFs Malley and Dolpp acted as the FAST/RIT unit for a simulated fire in a warehouse. Taking time to work with our mutual aid companies is extremely important to a seamless fireground operation. Crews were also shown some on site fire suppression equipment at the plant that can be utilized by firefighters. A special thanks goes out to Dupont, Sheridan Park Fire District, Kenilworth Fire District, and River Road Fire District. #fire #firefighter #fast #rit #nyspffa #iaff #tonawanda #professionalfirefighter

Your Tonawanda Professional Firefighters were called late last night to the Town of Tonawanda to assist Sheridan Park Fire with a vacant structure fully involved in fire. We were sent as a FAST Team, which a specially trained group whose job on the fire scene is to rescue a firefighter should something happen to them inside the fire (Such as in the event of floor or ceiling collapse, a firefighter becoming lost or disoriented, or any other life threatening event). It is a standard precaution for all fires, and thankfully no one was seriously injured at this particular incident. #tonawanda #professional #firefighters #IAFF #NYSPFFA #l859

Our Story

Following a disastrous fire as the Tonawanda Brewing Company in August of 1913, at which two of the city’s fire apparatus were delayed almost 30 minutes a proposal to hire paid drivers was considered. In September of 1913 a resolution was adopted by the city to hire four driver/janitors and a paid fire chief; a civil service exam was held and on November 15th, 1913 the first drivers began work in the city. Much has changed since those first members were hired, the city has since changed from hiring drivers to hiring firefighters. Each of the newly hired probationary firefighters attends the fire academy where they learn the skills needed to begin protecting our citizens. Each member is also required to have at a minimum an EMT-Basic certification prior to appointment; currently we have 14 Paramedics who deliver advanced life support to those in need. Our members are also trained in many technical rescue specialties and we provide mutual aid to surrounding communities. At this time 24 Professional Firefighters spread across 4 platoons protect the city providing fire, rescue and emergency medical services.

I am gonna give a HUGE THANK YOU to our COT fire department! Our Girl Scout troop had a tour planned at the police station tonight. Sadly at the last minute it had to be cancelled due to issues with an arrest earlier today. So we scrambled! And the COTFD really came thru for us! They gave us a royal treatment with literally 20 minutes notice! We learned about all of the trucks, how they do CPR on pets, what their duties are and more! The girls really enjoyed their tour and their ride in the fire truck! A huge thank you to Brandon McGuire, Jeff State and Tim Price for taking time to help us out! (And for putting up with a lotttttt of questions!) Thank you for protecting and serving our community and teaching our children (and parents!) the importance of fire safety!!
I want to give a huge thank you to everybody we had the pleasure of meeting today for SPCA calendar shoot. Everybody was so great and welcoming to Taz. Had a great time!
Every year, firefighters from around the WNY region participate in the Fight for Air Climb: Buffalo in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association.
