This morning members of “D” Platoon conducted an Air Consumption Drill while on duty. Members performed several tasks that are commonly performed on the fireground in a repeating circuit until all of their breathing air was completely depleted. This type of drill allows firefighters to see how quickly their air supply is depleted while performing heavy physical tasks on a simulated fire scene. #iaff #nyspffa #tonawanda #cityoftonawanda #firefighter #professionalfirefighter #training #firedepartment

This training is the final course in the New York State fire officer series and covers such topics as member/management relations, hazard and risk analysis, and succession planning. This will help to ensure our department remains safe and progressive moving forward. Congratulations Chief McNulty on being one of the first in the state to obtain this certification! #cityoftonawandaprofessionalfirefighters #nyspffa #iafflocal859

FLASHOVER - when all combustible material reaches its ignition temperature.
This creates a dangerous situation, that even with all our protective gear, will not protect us for more than a few seconds.
Today, 6 of our members got to experience this condition in a safe and controlled manner to raise their awareness on how these conditions develop.

Last night, just after 10 PM, a person walking their dog called 911 to report a person who had fallen through the ice into the canal. "A" shift under the command of Assistant Chief Shane Mast responded with 2 Firefighters dressed in special suits designed for this type of emergency. The 2 Firefighters went out on the ice and removed the victim from the water. With the assistance of the City of Tonawanda Police Department the patient was then pulled back to shore and quickly placed into Twin City Ambulance before being transported to the hospital for further evaluation. From the time of the call to the person being removed from the water was about 10 minutes. Excellent cooperation between all agencies and regular training was evident for this successful rescue.

It’s that time of year again. This morning our members participated in ice water rescue operations. This training requires rapid and efficient use of equipment and personnel. Many different methods and techniques for victim removable were utilized during these training evolutions. Remember that no ice is 100% safe.

A special thank you to the citizen who delivered us coffee at the end of our training. It definitely helped to warm us up!

At approximately 0938hrs today, Platoon 3 under the Command of Assistant Chief Ed Yaminski, responded to a reported structure fire on First Ave.
The Box Alarm assignment of Engine 6, 4, Truck 1, Rescue 1 and Car 10 responded.
On arrival, smoke was coming from a 2 and a half story frame structure that was an upper/lower duplex.
Off duty manpower and a FAST Team from the City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters was requested.
The first floor resident was evacuated, but the second floor resident was trapped and unable to exit due to the smoke and fire condition on the first floor.
As crews advanced a handline in the first floor, personnel raised a ground ladder to the second floor on the number 1 side, and rescued the victim from the balcony.
The second floor resident was then assisted down the ladder and to safety. That resident was also uninjured.
Firefighters operating on the first floor were able to knock down the fire and contain it to a room on the first floor.
Ventilation and overhaul also occurred.
Crews were picked up in just under an hour, and the scene was left with the NT Fire Investigation Team.

The funding will allow the department to purchase new hoses and nozzles, as well as other necessary equipment. It will replace some equipment that has been in use for over 50 years and help the department more efficiently respond to fire emergencies. https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/erie-county/tonawanda/tonawanda-fire-department-gets-106k-grant/ City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters

DAMAGE LIMITED IN ISLAND RESIDENTIAL FIRE - OCCUPANT PREVENTS SPREAD OF FIRE BY CLOSING BEDROOM DOOR At 4:15pm on Monday, November 11th, GIFC volunteer firefighters responded to a structure fire at a residential home on Garden Parkway. An alert neighbor discovered the fire and immediately dialed 911 for assistance. Meanwhile, the lone occupant safely exited the home. Engines 2, 3, 5, and Ladder Truck 6, along with firefighters began to arrive on location within several minutes and commenced an interior attack. The fire was confined to a second floor rear bedroom and was knocked down and under control by 4:37pm. Fire Chief Matt Osinski reports total damage of $30,000 to the building and $30,000 to the contents. He noted that before leaving the burning home, the occupant had the presence of mind to close the bedroom door, thereby preventing the fire from gaining additional oxygen and spreading throughout the home. An exact cause has not been determined and the fire remains under investigation by the GIFC and Erie County Sheriff's Office. Mutual aid assistance was rendered by the Sheridan Park Fire Department and City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters. There were no injuries to report. Additionally, the American Red Cross of Western and Central New York was contacted for possible assistance. All participating units returned in service by 6:28pm.
