Halloween is super exciting for kids, but can also be very dangerous. On average, twice as many child pedestrians are killed while walking on Halloween compared to any other day of the year. Stay safe by staying VISIBLE: bring flashlights, glow sticks and reflective goodie bags, and add reflective tape to costumes.

On August 21st our team was dispatched for a man suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. They happened to be right down the street. When our team members and City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters arrived, they did CPR and defibrillated the patient, obtaining a return of spontaneous circulation. Our team members then transported him to the hospital where he stayed for 3 weeks. Today, they were given the gift of meeting him and his family.
Though survival of cardiac arrest is fairly rare, this family was blessed with more time!

On Monday, October 9th at 5:15pm, members of C Shift (supplemented with off duty response) were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a roof at 10 Grant Street. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire pushing from the roof on the B side of the structure. Aggressive interior attack was initiated, along with coordinated exterior roof ventilation operations. Fire was found in the walls of the second floor, with heavy extension throughout the attic. The main body of fire was knocked down within 10 minutes of crews arriving on scene, with extensive overhaul to follow. No injuries were reported, Red Cross was requested to render aid to the family. We’d like to thank North Tonawanda Professional Firefighters Local 1333 and Brighton Volunteer Fire Co #5 for responding to the scene, as well as Grand Island Fire Company and Ellicott Creek Volunteer Fire Company for backfilling HQ for the duration of the incident.

Friday morning the officers and firefighters of D Shift and our Fire Prevention Capt Leonard Frears conducted a breathe down drill. This drill consists of a circuit with 8 stations, multiple laps and firefighters wearing their full PPE. It is meant to push us physically, deplete our cylinder of air and gives us an idea of how long we can operate under these conditions. Drills like this are an integral part in remaining combat ready and effective on the fire ground.

Summer's heat will be upon our region just as schools return to session. Highs will be 10 to 15 or more degrees above normal for the 6 to 10 day period. The good news? Daylight hours are more than 2 hours less than an early July heat wave, meaning longer nights for cooling.

Congratulations Chief!

Thanks Adopt Jax the Hound for stopping by Station 3 on Wheeler St and visiting with the members of C Shift. You are welcome back anytime!

Just got back from a walk! Some City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters were hanging out at the fire station, so of course Jax made friends with all of them. Now he's waiting for sprinkler time.

With the generous donations and sponsors of our annual golf tournament, your City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters were able to award two separate college scholarships this year. Congratulations to this year's recipients of the City of Tonawanda UFA Local 859 Memorial Scholarship, Autumn Gardner and Owen Close. Thank you so much City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters for hosting our homeschool group and teaching all about fire safety! Some of those kiddos today have never laughed so hard in their life! Some were so awe struck to be in front of their heros they were shy! And some simply just feel more safe knowing their family has a fire plan... everyone wants to be more like a rabbit and have 2 ways out! You all did an amazing job and we are so lucky to have you all!

OH! and to Firefighter Nikki... you rocked the world for some of these girls!
Yesterday we joined City of Tonawanda Mayor Rick Davis and Chief Chuck Stuart to announce a fire grant awarded to the City of Tonawanda Fire Department totaling over $106,000. The funding will allow the department to purchase new hoses and nozzles, as well as other necessary equipment. It will replace some equipment that has been in use for over 50 years and help the department more efficiently respond to fire emergencies. https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/erie-county/tonawanda/tonawanda-fire-department-gets-106k-grant/ City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters

Yesterday afternoon, City of Tonawanda Fire was dispatched for a house fire at 7 Morgan Street, with a report of people still inside. Once on location crews were updated that a passerby was able to alert residents and assist them out of the structure. Crews then went to work to aggressively attack and extinguish the fire.

So I just want to give a shout out to the Tonawanda paramedics/Fire dept that showed up at my house today for my sick mom! You were all amazing caring understanding group and the patience you showed during all the questions were remarkable! Thank you for your guidance my moms oxygen level being so low was due to pneumonia they actually thought it was due to covid but her test came back negative.. so she wasn’t well enough to come home and I know I kept stressing I didn’t want her to go to the ER but Thank you for really reminding me how important it was even though I was worried about her catching covid there! Hated leaving her there but I know she is where she needs to be right now tomorrow may have been one day to late! Thank you for being the real heroes in this crazy time!

DAMAGE LIMITED IN ISLAND RESIDENTIAL FIRE - OCCUPANT PREVENTS SPREAD OF FIRE BY CLOSING BEDROOM DOOR

At 4:15pm on Monday, November 11th, GIFC volunteer firefighters responded to a structure fire at a residential home on Garden Parkway. An alert neighbor discovered the fire and immediately dialed 911 for assistance. Meanwhile, the lone occupant safely exited the home.

Engines 2, 3, 5, and Ladder Truck 6, along with firefighters began to arrive on location within several minutes and commenced an interior attack. The fire was confined to a second floor rear bedroom and was knocked down and under control by 4:37pm.

Fire Chief Matt Osinski reports total damage of $30,000 to the building and $30,000 to the contents. He noted that before leaving the burning home, the occupant had the presence of mind to close the bedroom door, thereby preventing the fire from gaining additional oxygen and spreading throughout the home.

An exact cause has not been determined and the fire remains under investigation by the GIFC and Erie County Sheriff's Office.

Mutual aid assistance was rendered by the Sheridan Park Fire Department and City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters. There were no injuries to report. Additionally, the American Red Cross of Western and Central New York was contacted for possible assistance.

All participating units returned in service by 6:28pm.
