Following a disastrous fire as the Tonawanda Brewing Company in August of 1913, at which two of the city’s fire apparatus were delayed almost 30 minutes a proposal to hire paid drivers was considered. In September of 1913 a resolution was adopted by the city to hire four driver/janitors and a paid fire chief; a civil service exam was held and on November 15th, 1913 the first drivers began work in the city. Much has changed since those first members were hired, the city has since changed from hiring drivers to hiring firefighters. Each of the newly hired probationary firefighters attends the fire academy where they learn the skills needed to begin protecting our citizens. Each member is also required to have at a minimum an EMT-Basic certification prior to appointment; currently we have 14 Paramedics who deliver advanced life support to those in need. Our members are also trained in many technical rescue specialties and we provide mutual aid to surrounding communities. At this time 24 Professional Firefighters spread across 4 platoons protect the city providing fire, rescue and emergency medical services.
