Firefighters were busy throughout the evening last night as we responded to four fire alarms in just over four hours.

At 4:10pm, our Rescue 1 responded as the FAST (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) to a kitchen fire on Highland Ave. in the Ellwood Fire District and shortly after, we were dispatched to a District 1 alarm activation on Sawyer Ave. We were returned in service from both calls by 5pm, as Ellwood firefighters quickly extinguished the kitchen fire and the alarm on Sawyer was activated by a broken sprinkler head.

Just over an hour later, at 6:24pm, we responded to another kitchen fire at an apartment complex on Dryer Ave. Brighton 9 and 9-1 arrived quickly and found a small fire on the stove. Crews from Engines 2 and 3, plus Ladder 1, extinguished the remaining flames and ventilated the apartment building. Damage was estimated to be roughly $5,500 to the structure and contents.

Finally, at 8:22pm, less than an hour after returning from the kitchen fire, we were notified of a shed fire with possible exposures on E.Somerset Ave. Three Brighton Chiefs were on location within four minutes and quickly recognized there were power lines down in the backyard and notified National Grid. Engine 6 arrived shortly after and had the fire under control in under 12 minutes from initial dispatch. Engines 2, 3, and 4, Ladder 1, and Ellwood Squad 5 (FAST) kept the fire from extending to anything beyond minor damage to a neighboring fence. Damage was estimated at $30,000 and the cause is under investigation.

Brighton firefighters were up early today battling an early morning house fire on Briarhurst in Tonawanda. At 5:29 AM, initial dispatch reported a working fire, which was confirmed by Brighton 9 just 3 minutes later. Shortly after the Chief’s arrival, Engine 6 was the first apparatus on location and an efficient attack had the fire under control by 5:45 AM. Search, ventilation, and overhaul operations were performed by crews from Engines 2 and 3, Ladder 1, and Rescue 1. Ellwood Fire was also requested as a FAST. Surrounding roads were reopened and the scene was turned over to Town of Tonawanda Police and Erie County fire investigators by 7:15 AM. The cause is under investigation. Photo credit to FBNY.
