On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, during our business meeting, Representative Andy Whitt presented a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Life Member Darrell Bell. His wife, Stephanie, and their children were in attendance to commemorate this special occasion and celebrate his lasting impact on our department and community.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Representative Whitt for sponsoring this resolution and to the entire Madison County Legislative Delegation for their support in recognizing Darrell’s service, dedication, and legacy.

Last week, members of the Toney Volunteer Fire Department worked together to prepare and mail our annual donation campaign to homes throughout our community.

Inside you'll find a little information about who we are, what we do, and how your support helps us continue serving Toney and the surrounding area. As a volunteer department, we depend on community support to help fund equipment, training, maintenance, and other resources needed to answer the call when emergencies happen.

As a volunteer fire department, we rely heavily on the generosity of our community to help fund operations, equipment, training, and lifesaving resources. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us continue serving our neighbors when they need us most.

Medical Lifesaver Recognition

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, while having lunch with his wife at Mildred's in Ardmore, Battalion Chief John Penny was confronted with a situation no parent ever wants to face. A one-year-old child had begun choking and stopped breathing. Witnesses reported that the little girl had turned blue as her mother desperately cried out for help.

Without hesitation, Battalion Chief Penny sprang into action. Drawing upon his training and experience, he quickly assessed the child, administered back blows, and successfully cleared her airway. As he prepared to provide rescue breaths, the child began breathing on her own. He remained by her side until personnel from Ardmore Fire arrived and assumed care.

Battalion Chief Penny’s quick thinking, decisive actions, and unwavering commitment to others played a critical role in saving this young girl’s life. His actions exemplify the very best of the fire service and serve as a reminder that firefighters are never truly off duty.

Please join me in recognizing Battalion Chief John Penny for his outstanding professionalism, selfless service, and dedication to protecting others. Through his preparedness and willingness to act, he not only saved a life but also reminded us all of the profound difference one person can make.

Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue would like to congratulate several of our dedicated volunteers for their continued commitment to advancing their education and strengthening the service they provide to our community.

Please join us in recognizing Captain Alex Whitt on his successful completion of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Course through the Alabama Fire College. This achievement required more than 200 hours of coursework, clinical rotations, and hands-on skills training. Captain Whitt’s dedication to expanding his medical knowledge and capabilities will have a lasting impact on the patients and citizens we serve.

We would also like to congratulate Firefighters Savannah Hunnicutt and Jerimy Stewart on their successful completion of the Fire and Emergency Services Instructor II Course. This accomplishment included 40 hours of intensive coursework and project-based training, equipping them with the skills necessary to educate, mentor, and develop the next generation of firefighters.

Chief Heath Jones shared:

“The strength of our department lies in the dedication of our volunteers and their willingness to continually learn and grow. Alex, Savannah, and Jerimy have invested countless hours outside of their personal and family commitments to better serve this community. Their achievements reflect the professionalism, passion, and commitment that define our department. We are incredibly proud of each of them and grateful for their continued service.”

Earlier today, Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Pulaski Pike and Beaver Dam Road. No injuries were reported; however, fluids from the vehicle were leaking into the nearby creek.

Huntsville Fire & Rescue’s Hazardous Materials Team responded and deployed absorbent pillows to contain and collect the spilled materials.

Please use caution when traveling through the area until permanent repairs can be made to the damaged guardrail.
