A Letter from the Chief

Toney Community,

I wanted to share an update on the progress of our new fire station project.

As many of you know, this project has been in development for more than two years. It has involved extensive planning, engineering, site reviews, environmental and archaeological studies, financing requirements, and coordination with USDA, government officials, and our architectural and engineering teams.

I am pleased to announce that the construction bid package is now 100% complete! This is a major milestone that allows us to officially transition into the next phase of the project.

Our current anticipated schedule has construction beginning sometime in October! While that timeline remains subject to change as we work through the bidding and contract award process, we are optimistic about our progress and excited to be getting closer to breaking ground.

A tremendous amount of work has taken place behind the scenes to reach this point. Countless meetings, evaluations, reviews, design revisions, and conversations have required careful planning and coordination. We have encountered challenges along the way, but everyone involved has remained committed to finding solutions and moving this project forward.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed their time, expertise, and support. This project has truly been a team effort, and reaching this milestone would not have been possible without those who believe in the future of our department and the community we proudly serve.

Most importantly, thank you to our community and membership for your continued support. This new station represents a historic achievement and major investment in the future of our department and will strengthen our ability to serve our growing community for generations to come.

It is an honor and privilege to serve as your Fire Chief. I am proud of how far we have come and excited about what lies ahead.

We’re excited to share that the official website for the 2026 Darrell Bell Memorial Golf Tournament is now live!

On Monday, October 19, we’ll come together at The Highlands Course at Hampton Cove for a day of golf, fellowship, and community as we honor the life and legacy of Darrell Bell.

Darrell meant a great deal to the Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue family, and this tournament gives us an opportunity to remember him while supporting the department and community he served.

Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue is proud to recognize Deputy Chief Michael Shrum for successfully completing the PULSE Leadership Program through Leadership Greater Huntsville!

PULSE is a leadership development program designed specifically for first responders, educators, and healthcare professionals, providing participants with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills, build meaningful relationships, expand their professional networks, and gain new perspectives they can bring back to the organizations and communities they serve.

Deputy Chief Shrum’s completion of PULSE reflects his continued commitment to professional growth, leadership, and service. The knowledge, relationships, and experiences gained through programs like PULSE don’t just benefit the individual, they strengthen our department and help us continue providing the best possible service to the Toney community and surrounding areas.

We are also excited to see opportunities like this becoming more accessible to members of the volunteer fire service throughout Madison County. Investing in the development of our firefighters and officers today helps build stronger departments and stronger community leaders for tomorrow.

⛳ Darrell Bell Memorial Golf Tournament 2026 🚒

Earlier this year, the Toney Volunteer Fire & Rescue family lost one of our own, Darrell Bell. Darrell’s service, friendship, and dedication to our department and community left an impact that will not be forgotten.

This October, we invite our friends, families, local businesses, fellow first responders, and community members to join us for the Darrell Bell Memorial Golf Tournament, a day dedicated to remembering Darrell, celebrating his life, and continuing the spirit of service he represented.

🚒 A Night of Gratitude and Recognition 🚒

Last night, the Toney Volunteer Fire Department had the privilege of hosting an Honorary Recognition Ceremony recognizing former Chairman and Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon and Senator Tom Butler for their many years of unwavering support for the fire service and the citizens of Madison County.

While Mr. McCutcheon was unable to attend, we were honored to have Madison County Commission Chairman Rex Vaughn accept the recognition on his behalf. We sincerely appreciate Chairman Vaughn taking the time to join us and help celebrate this special occasion.

We were also honored to be joined by members of neighboring fire departments, elected officials, community leaders, and citizens who came together to recognize two individuals whose leadership and dedication have made a lasting impact on public safety throughout our county.

On behalf of the men and women of the Toney Volunteer Fire Department, thank you to Mr. McCutcheon and Senator Butler for always standing behind the fire service and the communities we proudly serve. Your support has helped strengthen volunteer departments and improve the safety and well-being of countless families across Madison County.

A special thank you to Chairman Rex Vaughn for representing Mr. McCutcheon, to the Madison Crossroads Community Center for hosting the ceremony, and to everyone who attended to help make the evening a success. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the partnerships that make our communities stronger.

Together, we continue to build a safer, stronger Madison County.

✂️🏫 Celebrating a New Chapter for Our Community 🚒

On Friday morning, Toney Volunteer Fire Department Chief Heath Jones, Deputy Chief Mike Shrum, and Battalion Chief Jeffery Maupin had the honor of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the official opening of the new Sparkman Intermediate School .

This new school represents an exciting investment in the future of our students, educators, and the entire community. We're proud to stand alongside our local leaders, Madison County Schools, and community partners as we celebrate this important milestone.

As your local fire department, we value the strong relationships we have with our schools. Whether it's conducting pre-incident planning, participating in safety training, or supporting school events, our goal is always the same, to help provide a safe environment where students and staff can learn and thrive.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make Sparkman Intermediate School a reality. We look forward to serving and supporting the school for many years to come.
