When technology works, it’s great. Sometimes too great. The National Weather Service Rebroadcast module that syncs to our Nixle Mass Text Notification system sent out a series of repeated text alerts this morning at about 1 a.m….. THIRTEEN in fact! We were forced to deactivate the NWS rebroadcast link until we can contact our provider to make sure the mass text notifications do not send alerts every minute in the early morning hours. We plan to have this resolved and re-establish the NWS link. Although it was out of our control, we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

Today, the streets of Downtown Tonkawa are proudly lined with American flags in remembrance of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom.

The flags throughout our community look absolutely beautiful, and we extend a sincere thank you to the American Legion for placing them today in honor of our fallen service members.

From all of us at the City of Tonkawa — may we never forget.

The Kay County Healthy Living Coalition and the Tonkawa Police Department partner on compliance checks to deter to***co and alcohol sales to youth
In an ongoing effort to uphold public health and safety standards, the Kay County Healthy Living Coalition in partnership with the Tonkawa Police Department will be teaming up to conduct to***co and alcohol compliance checks in Tonkawa in May-June 2026. These checks, which involve inspections and enforcement actions, are vital in ensuring that retailers in Tonkawa adhere to regulations designed to protect consumers, particularly minors, from the harmful effects of to***co and alcohol products.
The legal age to purchase to***co and alcohol products is 21, according to federal state law. To***co and alcohol use among minors can have severe consequences on their health and well-being, leading to long-term addiction and a range of associated health issues. Compliance checks serve as a crucial deterrent to prevent underage individuals from accessing these harmful substances.
Conducting compliance checks also upholds the legal standards set forth by local, state, and federal regulations governing the sale and distribution of to***co and alcohol products. Businesses found in violation of these standards may face penalties, license revocations, or other enforcement actions to deter future non-compliance.
Through education, training, and enforcement, compliance checks encourage retailers to adopt responsible practices in the sale of to***co and alcohol products. This includes verifying the age of customers, displaying appropriate signage, and adhering to product labeling requirements.

Tonkawa friends, we officially broke the snow globe. ❄️

After record snowfall, our streets are still slick and our first responders have been extremely busy responding to accidents and vehicles sliding off the road. If you can stay home, please do. The couch is undefeated in this weather.

If you absolutely have to travel, play it smart. Bring the basics just in case you get stuck: a phone and charger, food, water, warm clothing, and blankets. This is not the time for a casual cruise around town in pajama bottoms and Crocs. Winter always wins that argument.

Before heading out, check Google for closures and call businesses ahead of time to see if they’re open or operating on adjusted hours. It could save you a trip and a white-knuckle drive.

If you need assistance, contact the Tonkawa Police Department Non-Emergency Line at (580) 628-2516. For all emergencies, dial 911.

A big thank you to the City of Tonkawa Public Works Street Department for clearing, sanding, and salting our roads, and to ODOT and the County crews who have been doing outstanding work as well.

Let’s all do our part. Stay warm, stay patient, and stay off the roads if you can.
