Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park is the only national park unit that commemorates a US Supreme Court decision. On this Constitution Day, we remember the Supreme Court’s revision of our national understanding of the Fourteenth Amendment on May 17, 1954. Since that day, “separate but equal” has been “inherently unequal” and unconstitutional in the United States.

Tours of Topeka’s historic Monroe School have been extended through mid-November 2026!

Led by Volunteer-in-Parks (VIP) Jake Brillhart, these one-hour tours highlight the building’s architecture and its architect, Thomas W. Williamson, and include a visit to the second floor.

Free tours are offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the following Saturdays:

• September 12, 2026
• October 10, 2026
• November 14, 2026

Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park is pleased to announce that Victoria Lawton Benson—daughter of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka plaintiff Maude E. Lawton and a former student at Topeka’s segregated Buchanan Elementary School—will conclude our Saturdays with a Student program on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. She will be joined by Carolyn Wims-Campbell, a former student of Topeka’s segregated McKinley Elementary School. Maude E. Lawton was one of the 13 plaintiff-parents in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka; the 1951 case filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas challenging the legal segregation of Topeka’s public elementary schools.

Learn about Topeka’s historic Monroe School through a free, one-hour guided tour at Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park!
