Continuing to Develop Our Leaders

Lieutenants Sean Rewerts and Brett Ashwill attended Fire Officer II training at the Manhattan Fire Department the last several days.

Fire Officer II is an advanced leadership and management course designed for fire service company officers who are preparing to take on greater responsibility within their departments. The course builds upon Fire Officer I and focuses on the skills needed to manage personnel, resources, and emergency operations while also addressing many of the administrative responsibilities that happen behind the scenes of a fire department.

Topics include personnel management and evaluation, budgeting and purchasing, developing policies and procedures, public and media communication, fire and accident investigations, health and safety, post-incident analysis, and managing multi-unit emergency incidents.

The course, provided through the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute, prepares officers to meet the Fire Officer II professional qualification requirements and is an IFSAC and Pro Board certification course.

Training like this helps our officers continue developing the leadership, decision-making, and management skills necessary to better serve our firefighters and our community.

We are proud to continue investing in the professional development of our members and the future leadership of Mission Township Fire Department.

New Public Fire & Emergency Response Data Available!

Mission Township Fire Department is excited to share a new resource that gives the public greater access to fire and emergency response information in our community and across Kansas.

The National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) has launched NERIS Public, allowing anyone to explore recent incident information reported by fire departments across the country. Unlike previous national reporting systems that could take a year or more to publish data, NERIS Public is updated multiple times each week, providing a much more current look at fire and emergency response activity.

Information available through NERIS Public can include incident type, date and time, general location information, actions taken, mutual aid, fire protection systems, property use, displacement information, and other data useful for identifying trends and understanding community risk.

For privacy and responder safety, sensitive information such as patient medical information, detailed unit responses, incident narratives, and other operational information is not included in the public dataset.

The information is intended to support community risk reduction, fire prevention, planning, research, and a better understanding of the emergencies fire departments respond to. It is not intended to serve as a live dispatch system or for operational or tactical decision-making.

As fire departments continue reporting through NERIS, this new system will provide our communities with a more timely and transparent look at the work being performed by the fire service.

There’s Still Time to Register for Our AEMT Class!

Mission Township Fire Department still has student spots available for our upcoming Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course beginning September 14th, 2026.

If you’ve been considering taking the next step in EMS, there is still time to get registered. This course is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge, develop advanced patient care skills, and continue progressing in your EMS career.

Classes will run from September 14th, 2026 through March 4th, 2027, meeting Mondays and Fridays from 1230–1630 at Mission Township Fire Department, Station 40. Additional Saturday classes will be held in December covering AHA BLS, ACLS, and Cardiology.

We have also secured student clinical opportunities with:

Topeka AMR

Mission Township Board Meeting!

Mission Township holds a regular Township Board Meeting once a month, these meetings are open to the public.

Our next board meeting will be held this Thursday at 6:00 PM at 3101 SW Urish Rd.

These meetings are not only for the fire department. They are for the entire township, and every patron of Mission Township is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Board meetings are scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of every month at 6:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity to stay informed, hear updates, ask questions, and be involved in what is happening within Mission Township.

Annual SCBA Testing!

Today at Mission Township Fire Department, Conrad Fire Equipment completed annual testing of our self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) packs, and face masks.

An SCBA is the air pack firefighters wear when entering smoke-filled, oxygen-deficient, or otherwise hazardous environments. Each unit includes a compressed-air cylinder, harness, regulator, face mask, and safety alarms. The SCBA does not filter smoke; it provides firefighters with a clean, independent supply of breathable air.

Our RIT packs are specialized emergency air systems carried by Rapid Intervention Teams. These teams are assigned to rescue firefighters who become trapped, injured, lost, or run low on air inside a hazardous environment. A RIT pack can provide an emergency air supply to a firefighter while crews work to remove them from danger.

Annual testing helps verify that the regulators, gauges, alarms, airflow systems, masks, and other components are functioning properly and within required safety standards. This equipment is a firefighter’s lifeline inside a hazardous environment, making routine inspection, maintenance, and testing essential to keeping our crews safe and ready to respond.

Training Recap!

Last night, personnel from Shawnee County Fire District #2 - Auburn Fire, Rossville Fire Department, Shawnee County Fire District 4, and Mission Township Fire Department participated in hands-on training covering the fundamentals and effective use of thermal imaging cameras, led by an outside instructor.

A thermal imaging camera, commonly called a TIC, detects differences in heat and displays them as an image on the camera’s screen. Unlike a standard camera, a TIC can help firefighters identify heat signatures in dark or smoke-filled environments. Firefighters may use TICs to help locate victims, find the seat of a fire, identify hidden fire extension, monitor changing conditions, and navigate through areas with limited visibility.

While TICs are valuable tools, firefighters must understand how to properly interpret the images they display. Different materials, reflective surfaces, and rapidly changing fire conditions can affect what is shown on the screen. This training allowed members to strengthen their understanding of both the capabilities and limitations of the equipment.

Crews then applied those skills using a dollhouse fire behavior prop. This scaled-down structure allows firefighters to safely observe how fire, heat, and smoke travel through a building. By opening and closing doors and windows, the instructor could control ventilation and create different flow paths, demonstrating how fresh air entering a structure can influence fire growth and how heat and smoke move toward openings.

Members used their TICs throughout the evolutions to observe temperature changes, track the movement of heat, and compare what the camera displayed with the visible fire conditions. Although the prop is much smaller than an actual residence, the same principles of fire behavior, ventilation, and flow paths apply inside a full-size home.

Training like this helps our firefighters make more informed decisions, recognize changing conditions, and use their equipment more effectively during emergency operations.

Thank you to our instructor and all participating departments for another great evening of shared training. We would also like to thank our patrons and board members for their continued support, which allows us to provide valuable training opportunities like this for our personnel.

Training Recap!

Last night, personnel from Mission Township Fire Department, Shawnee County Fire District #2 - Auburn Fire, Shawnee County Fire District 4, and Rossville Fire Department gathered at Station 40 for an evening of training focused on START Triage and Rescue Task Force operations.

We would like to extend a special thank you to guest instructor Micky Huber for sharing his knowledge and experience with our members. The training provided valuable instruction on rapid patient triage during mass casualty incidents, as well as the coordination and deployment of Rescue Task Forces in high-threat environments.

Training opportunities like these help ensure our personnel remain prepared to respond effectively to complex emergencies while providing the highest level of care and service to our community.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in making this training a success.

Mission Township Fire Department is excited to announce that registration is now open for our upcoming Advanced Emergency Medical Technician class.

Incident Recap!

This afternoon, Mission Township Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on westbound I-70 just west of mile marker 355.

Crews arrived to find a Kansas Department of Transportation maintenance truck's trailer involved in fire. Thankfully, the driver was able to safely exit the vehicle, and no injuries were reported.

We would like to thank Shawnee County Fire District 4 for their assistance on scene, as well as our law enforcement and highway partners who helped with traffic control and scene safety.

Incidents like this are a good reminder to slow down and use caution anytime you see emergency crews working along the roadway. Please use caution in the area.
