At TFD, we can only hope to serve our citizens with the same level of care and compassion that the employees at the Topeka Zoo show their animals every day.

Crews assigned to the zoo’s response area got an awesome behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and worked alongside zoo staff to discuss emergency access to restricted areas, unique hazards, and ways we can work together to provide the best possible response when emergencies happen.

A huge thank you to the zoo staff for taking the time to share their knowledge and help us better prepare to serve our community—and all of its residents, furry, feathered, and otherwise!

The amount of bend in this ladder is wild! 🤯🪜
Believe it or not, it’s designed to do exactly this. Every ladder at TFD is rigorously tested each year to ensure it can handle the demands of the fire service and safely support Firefighters when it matters most.
Regular testing helps us identify any damage, defects, or wear before a ladder ever goes back into service. When our lives and the lives of the people we serve depend on our equipment, there’s no room for failure. 🚒💪

⚠️ FLOOD WATCH ISSUED FOR TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY ⚠️

The U.S. National Weather Service Topeka has issued a Flood Watch for Topeka and Shawnee County from late tonight through Sunday morning due to the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

🚗 If you encounter flooded roadways:
❌ Never drive through standing or moving water
❌ Never go around barricades or warning signs
✅ Turn around and find an alternate route

Just 12 inches of moving water can carry away a vehicle, and flooded roads may be deeper and more dangerous than they appear.

🌊 Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown® 🌊

Stay weather-aware, monitor local forecasts, and be prepared for changing conditions throughout the weekend.

🎓🔥 Congratulations, 2026 Camp Courage Graduates! 🔥🎓

What an incredible accomplishment! After a week filled with challenges, learning, teamwork, and adventure, we proudly congratulate the 10 outstanding young women who successfully completed Camp Courage 2026. 👏👩‍🚒

Throughout the week, these future leaders embraced every opportunity to learn and grow as they participated in hands-on firefighter training, search and rescue, forcible entry, bailouts, rappelling, vehicle extrication, fire inspections, hazardous materials education, first aid, and much more. 🚒💪

Each participant demonstrated courage, determination, resilience, and teamwork while stepping outside their comfort zones and discovering new strengths within themselves. Along the way, they built confidence, developed leadership skills, and formed friendships that will last a lifetime. ❤️

A special thank you to the outstanding women instructors from surrounding fire departments and the female firefighters and staff of the Topeka Fire Department who generously shared their knowledge, mentorship, experience, and passion throughout the week. Your dedication helped inspire the next generation of leaders and public servants.

The Topeka Fire Department responds to approximately 25,000 calls annually. Maintaining a modern and dependable fleet is essential to providing effective emergency services to the community. As apparatus age, increasing maintenance costs, reduced reliability, and extended downtime can impact operational readiness. A planned replacement program ensures Firefighters have the equipment they need to respond safely and effectively to medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, structure fires, and other critical incidents. Investing in fleet replacement supports public safety, enhances response capabilities, and helps ensure uninterrupted service to the citizens of Topeka.

🚒🚁 A Special Honor at Forbes Field 🚁🚒

On June 6, 2026, Topeka Fire Department Engine 10 was honored to assist the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation Regiment of the Kansas National Guard during a retirement reception at Forbes Field.

As part of the celebration, Engine 10 participated in a traditional “wash down” of a Black Hawk helicopter carrying the retiree, helping mark the occasion with a memorable and well-deserved tribute. 💦🚁

The wash-down ceremony is a time-honored tradition used to recognize and honor aviation personnel as they conclude their distinguished service and begin a new chapter.

Congratulations to the retiree on a remarkable career of service, dedication, and commitment to our nation. 🇺🇸 We are proud to have played a small role in celebrating this special milestone.
