This includes a staff of eight that perform administrative, clerical and fleet functions. The remaining personnel are paid professional firefighters, of which 220 are State certified Emergency Medical Technicians trained to render aid in emergency situations; and Webster, an Accelerant Detection canine trained to detect ignitable liquids used to set and/or accelerate fires. The Department is comprised of many organizational units and teams working together to help keep Topeka one of the safest communities in the Midwest to live and raise a family. The Topeka Fire Department is committed to the pursuit of excellence and a commitment to public service. From fire-safe decorations and costumes to safe trick-or-treating and staying alert on our roadways, these important reminders can help keep everyone safe while enjoying the Halloween festivities! 🍬🕸️

🚒🚓 The Topeka Fire Department and Topeka Police Department remind everyone that a little preparation and extra caution can go a long way toward making Halloween safe, fun and memorable for all!

🧥❤️ Share the Warmth, Topeka! Help Us Wrap Our Community in Warm Hugs By October 31! ❤️🧥

The Topeka Fire Department (TFD) and KTWU want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who has already donated to the 2026 Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive! Your generosity is helping keep our neighbors clothed in warm hugs this upcoming winter! 🥰

❤️ The kindness and generosity of our community have been truly heartwarming! We've had thoughtful donors hand-knit hats and scarves, others lovingly sew small quilts, and many generously contribute brand-new clothing, coats and other winter essentials! 🧶🧣🧥 Every stitch, every donation and every act of kindness helps bring warmth and comfort to someone in need!

🧤🧣 There's still time to SHARE THE WARMTH! Now through October 31, we're collecting new and gently used (clean) sweaters, hoodies, coats, scarves, gloves and blankets for children and families in need.

❤️ Items especially needed include children's clothing in sizes 3–7, hats, gloves, socks and children's blankets or throws.

🚒 All 12 Topeka Fire Stations have outdoor donation bins, making it easy to drop off your donations and help spread a little warmth throughout our community.

🏘️ As Mister Rogers reminded us, being a good neighbor starts with kindness. Together, we can make a difference, one warm hug at a time! 🤗

🔥🚒 FIRE PREVENTION MONTH Day 21: Wood Stove Fire Safety Tips! 🪵🏠

As temperatures begin to drop, there's nothing quite like the warmth and comfort of a wood-burning stove! 🔥 However, without proper maintenance and safe burning practices, wood stoves can pose serious fire hazards.

During October's Fire Prevention Month, the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) reminds residents to take a few simple precautions to keep their homes warm AND safe throughout the colder months ahead! ❤️

🪵 Follow these important wood stove fire safety tips:

🔥 Keep a Safe Distance. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from your wood stove, including furniture, curtains, rugs, firewood and other combustible materials.

🪵 Burn the Right Wood. Use only dry, seasoned hardwoods in your wood stove. Avoid burning trash, paper or treated wood, which can produce dangerous fumes and increase fire hazards.

🧹 Schedule Annual Chimney Maintenance. Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned at least once a year to help prevent dangerous creosote buildup and chimney fires.

🪣 Dispose of Ashes Safely. Allow ashes to cool before placing them in a covered metal container. Store the container outdoors, at least 10 feet away from your home and other combustible materials. Remember, ashes can remain hot for several days!

Remember: A warm home is a safe home! Proper wood stove maintenance and a few simple fire safety precautions can help prevent a devastating house fire.

There's nothing quite like cozying up next to a warm fireplace on a chilly day! As temperatures drop, the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) reminds residents to practice fireplace and wood stove safety to help keep their homes and loved ones safe this heating season.

🔥 Follow these simple fire safety tips:

✅ Keep a safe distance: Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from your fireplace or wood stove.

✅ Burn safely: Never burn paper in your fireplace or wood stove.

✅ Extinguish the fire: Make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed or leaving your home.

✅ Schedule annual maintenance: Have your chimney inspected and cleaned each year by a qualified professional.

✅ Dispose of ashes safely: Place cooled ashes in a covered metal container and store it outdoors at least 10 feet away from your home.

During October's Fire Prevention Month, the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) reminds residents to use portable heaters safely to help prevent home fires and protect their families. ❤️

🌡️ Follow these important portable heater safety tips:

🔥 Keep a Safe Distance: Always keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, curtains, bedding, clothing and other combustible materials.

🏠 Choose a Safe Location: Place space heaters on a solid, flat, level surface. Never place them on furniture or near areas where they could be knocked over.

🔍 Inspect Cords and Plugs: Before using your space heater, check for cracked, frayed or damaged electrical cords and plugs. Never operate a heater with a damaged cord!

🔌 Plug Directly into Wall Outlets: Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip, as they can overheat and cause a fire.

Your Topeka Fire Department (TFD) encourages residents to check their home's electrical outlets, extension cords and power strips for potential fire hazards.

⚡ ELECTRICAL OUTLET SAFETY TIPS:

🔌 Don't Overload Outlets: Plugging too many devices into one outlet can cause overheating and increase the risk of fire.

✅ Secure Your Plugs: Always insert plugs fully into electrical outlets.

🚫 Never Force a Plug: Do not force a three-prong plug into a two-slot outlet.

👶 Protect Young Children: Install tamper-resistant electrical outlets to help prevent electrical injuries.

⚠️ Check for Loose Outlets: Replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit snugly.

During October's Fire Prevention Month, the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) reminds residents that practicing simple appliance and electrical safety habits can help prevent fires and keep your home and family safe! ❤️

👉 Follow these important appliance fire safety tips:

🔌 Plug Major Appliances Directly into Wall Outlets: Always plug refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers directly into a wall outlet.

🚫 Avoid Extension Cords: Never use an extension cord with a major appliance. Extension cords can overheat and start a fire!

🔋 Unplug Small Appliances: When small appliances are not in use, unplug them to reduce potential fire hazards.

🔥 Keep Flammable Items Away: Keep anything that can burn away from lamps, light fixtures and light bulbs.

🎉🎂 105 YEARS YOUNG! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MS. ANNIE HORTON! 🎂🎉

What an incredible milestone as we celebrated a beautiful lady and one of Topeka's very own, Ms. Annie Horton, on her 105th birthday! ❤️

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Ms. Horton received a special birthday surprise when members of the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) and Topeka Police Department (TPD) stopped by to deliver their warmest birthday wishes in person! 🚒🚓🎈

Our TFD firefighters and TPD officers had the honor of delivering birthday greetings in person to Ms. Horton, helping make her century plus milestone celebration even more memorable! 🥳💐

Happy 105th Birthday, Ms. Horton! 🎉 We wish you continued happiness, good health and many more wonderful moments surrounded by family, friends and a community that celebrates YOU! ❤️
