Topeka Fire Technical Rescue Team Responds to Pedestrian-Train Incident

The Topeka Fire Department responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a train near the US-75 Westgate Bridge on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at approximately 2:20 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews located an adult male near the railroad tracks beneath the bridge. Due to the difficult terrain and limited access to the area, the Topeka Fire Department Technical Rescue Team responded to assist crews.

Technical Rescue Team members utilized specialized rescue techniques to lift the individual from the railroad tracks to the bridge deck. The individual was then transported by AMR to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident response included three Engine Companies, the Technical Rescue Team and one Shift Commander.

The incident occurred just one day after Topeka Fire Department crews completed hands-on training with the University of Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute. The training, held during the week of August 17โ€“21, 2026, was part of TFDโ€™s ongoing annual training and provided firefighters an opportunity to practice specialized rescue skills used during technical rescue operations.

๐Ÿš’ From Extrication Tools to Aerial Views: Citizens Academy Takes It All In! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

Our small but mighty 6 Citizens Academy participants got an up-close look at several of the specialized skills and equipment our Topeka firefighters use to keep our community safe!

๐Ÿš— Truck 10 kicked things off with a demonstration of extrication tools and rescue techniques used to safely remove individuals trapped in vehicles.

๐Ÿš’ Next, participants took their learning to new heights with the Aerial 5 crew, enjoying a mile-high view of Topeka and learning more about aerial operations.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Finally, on a warm summer evening, the Engine 4 crew helped everyone cool off with a fire hose demonstrationโ€”and even gave participants the opportunity to try their hand at spraying the hoses!

It was a fun, educational and hands-on evening that gave our Citizens Academy participants a look at what it takes to serve our community each and every day.

๐Ÿ‘ A big THANK YOU to the crews of Truck 10, Aerial 5 and Engine 4 for sharing their time, knowledge and expertiseโ€”and for giving our participants the opportunity to learn firsthand what they do to help keep Topeka safe!
