The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office and the Shawnee County District Court (Kansas Judicial Branch) are issuing an urgent warning regarding a dangerous escalation in a circulation scam.

This particular scam includes:
❎ A call claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office
❎ A claim that you failed to appear for jury service
❎ Threats that if you hang up/disconnect the phone call, you will be arrested

❌ This scam has escalated beyond financial fraud. The scammer states that you must stay on the line with him while you drive to an address he provides.

THIS IS A SCAM. THIS IS A PHYSICAL LURE.
This is a tactic to get you to an isolated, unsafe location, likely for robbery, carjacking, or physical harm.

DO NOT DRIVE TO THE SCAMMER. Hang up immediately.

Chief Judge of the 3rd Judicial District, Steve Ebberts, said, “Calls reported to us came from a local phone number and the caller used my name as the judge who signed the warrant. Scammers make these calls look and sound legitimate, but the court does not initiate phone contact."

Remember:

💸 We will never ask you to pay us in gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other untraceable m**hods. We very rarely ask for or discuss money over the phone.

📍 About the only locations we will ask you to “meet us” to take care of a warrant is our lobby or the jail.

🚨 You can visit our website and click the online warrant search button to see if you actually have a warrant. If you do find you have a warrant, we can meet you at the jail or you can call us and we will come give you a ride.

☎️ Our phone number is 785-251-2200. Scammers can "spoof" this number to make it look like our name and phone number are calling you. Be cautious.

👮 Names and titles of our deputies & law enforcement officers are easily accessible and therefore used frequently during scam calls to sound legitimate. Hang up and call our phone number directly to verify if that officer actually wanted to speak with you.

Questions or concerns, contact the Shawnee County District Court (785-251-6788 or [email protected])

Join us as we celebrate the incredible journey Lieutenant Akim Reynolds has had as a law enforcement officer with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office 👏

Reynolds began his career with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office on December 23rd, 1996. He served for eight years as a deputy in the Narcotics Division. He was nominated by the KBI for a “bronze award” due to his m**h lab work in 2000. In 2004, Reynolds was assigned to be the Victim/Witness Coordinator for the agency and served in the Offender Registration Unit. In 2005, he was promoted to corporal in the Patrol Unit on 2nd shift. In April of 2006, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and stayed on 2nd shift patrol.

In 2007, Reynolds received the Outstanding Community Service Award, which is given to citizens who deserve to be commended for an outstanding act of community service. On several different occasions, he pulled money from his own pockets to help someone else in need. On one occasion, he bought a bus ticket for someone that was stranded in Topeka. On another occasion, he assisted a family from Sabetha by providing them with food and paying for their tow bill when their vehicle was broken down. A commander at that time said, “Not only is Sergeant Reynolds an outstanding officer, he is also a Good Samaritan. He sets the example for the rest of us to emulate.”

In 2008, Reynolds was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, where he worked on 3rd shift patrol until about 2014 when he moved to 1st shift lieutenant. In 2017, he transferred into Services and was their lieutenant until his retirement. Lieutenant Reynolds served on the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Team from 2001 until 2009. He was an instructor for the agency and a field-training officer during his career. He completed the FBI-LEEDA trilogy. He has a long list of certifications, education, and trainings that he has accomplished throughout his career.

Reynolds has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the Kansas State University and a master’s degree in administration of justice from Wichita State University.

His lovely wife, three daughters, and three grandsons have supported Reynolds throughout his almost 28-year career.

Congratulations on your retirement, Lieutenant Reynolds!
