As we continue to celebrate America 250, take a step back with us this to the days of covered wagons and one room schoolhouses in the still young state of Kansas. Let's talk about Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the “Little House on the Prairie” book series, was born in Wisconsin in 1867. Her family made the daunting journey to settle in Montgomery County, Kansas when she was barely 2 years old. Wilder's parents were enticed by the Homestead Act of 1862. They ventured to Kansas believing the land was open to white settlers, but the reality was their homestead was on the Osage Indian reservation. Despite this, the Wilder family built a log cabin on the property and lived through many harsh years on the frontier. By the spring of 1871, the family decided to move back to Wisconsin.

In the 1930s, Laura worked with her daughter Rose to write about her life growing up in different areas of the frontier and began publishing her stories. Little House on the Prairie was published in 1935 and shares the experiences her family had in southeast Kansas. Thanks to the recently released Netflix adaption, interest in the Wilder's story in Kansas has gained international attention.

Today, visitors to the Little House on the Prairie Museum in Independence can enter an old post office, a one-room school, and a replica of the Ingalls family cabin on the site of the original homestead. This location is also part of the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area.
