Last week, lawmakers in Topeka narrowly defeated a constitutional amendment that could have turned our Kansas Supreme Court into a partisan circus.

With your support, 13 state senators stood up and rejected this harmful proposal, keeping politics out of our Supreme Court and ensuring the nominees for our Kansas Supreme Court justices will continue to be vetted by legal experts and recommended based on merit--the best way to ensure our Court remains fair and impartial.

Ultra conservatives are determined remake state government in their image from top to bottom, but one thing is clear: when Kansans stand up together for fairness and democracy, we prove that our institutions are stronger.

Ultra-conservative Republicans in Topeka are furious they can’t control the Kansas Supreme Court, so they’re trying to take it over by amending the state constitution to turn it into a partisan circus.

Right now the Kansas Senate is debating an amendment that would turn our state's Supreme Court into a political circus. For more than 60 years, Kansas has selected Justices for our Kansas Supreme Court through a merit-based process, and our judicial selection system is a model for the nation.

But now some politicians in the Kansas Legislature want to change how Justices are selected. They want to inject politics into the Kansas Supreme Court, bringing partisanship to the one venue where it is still absent today.

Our Kansas Supreme Court must remain fair and impartial - and independent of politicians who want to bend it to their will. Kansas legislators should preserve our merit-based judicial selection system - and keep politics out of our courts.

The Kansas Supreme Court has wrapped up oral arguments for the October session. This week, the Court heard arguments in cases ranging from drug possession to a case that exposed the Kansas Legislature’s sloppy and politicized lawmaking during the pandemic. This morning, for the first time in the history of the Kansas Supreme Court Justices heard a case by video conference. Grateful that in the time of Covid-19 the court has reimagined the bench to continue to hear cases as fair and impartial jurists.

With the clock ticking down toward Easter, the court appeared to signal that any decision issued Saturday won’t address the constitutionality of the order itself
