The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Hutchinson.

The Hutchinson Police Department requested KBI assistance at approximately 7:23 p.m. Sunday, June 7. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

At approximately 6 p.m., Hutchinson police officers responded to a residence at 3313 Dartmouth Road to conduct follow-up on a theft investigation. An individual wanted for questioning, identified as Jonathan Lawrence, 30, of Hutchinson, stepped outside the residence to speak with the officers.

During the encounter, the officers observed that Lawrence was armed with a handgun. As the officers attempted to detain and disarm him, a physical altercation ensued. Lawrence battered both officers before fleeing into the garage of the residence.

One officer deployed a Taser, which caused Lawrence to fall and drop the handgun. While the second officer attempted to gain control of Lawrence, Lawrence reached for and regained control of the firearm. The officer who deployed the Taser, drew a service weapon, and fired multiple rounds, striking Lawrence.

Officers immediately rendered life-saving measures, and responding deputies from the Reno County Sheriff's Office assisted with medical aid until EMS arrived. Lawrence was transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel, and others. Today is National Naloxone Awareness Day.

Naloxone, also commonly referred to as Narcan, is life-saving medication. It restores normal breathing, within two to three minutes, for a person whose breath has slowed or stopped as a result of an opioid overdose.

Naloxone is not a solution to drug addiction but prevents a life from becoming another statistic.

DCCCA has implemented FREE naloxone vending machines throughout Kansas. Click the link to locate one near you: https://www.dccca.org/naloxone-vending-machines/

KBI agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night in Pittsburg, Kansas.

The Pittsburg Police Department (PPD) requested KBI assistance at approximately 10:25 p.m., on Wednesday, June 3. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to investigate.

On June 3, at approximately 10:05 p.m., an officer from PPD was in the roadway, near the department parking lot after his shift, when he observed a male subject acting erratically on the sidewalk in the 200 block of West 3rd. St., in Pittsburg.

Preliminary information indicates when the officer approached the man, near the northwest corner of the PPD property on 3rd St, he removed his clothes, and began running alongside the officer’s patrol car. The officer attempted to detain the man, later identified as Jalen Dior Green, 29, of Pittsburg. Green resisted and a physical fight ensued. The officer deployed a Taser, but it did not subdue him. During the struggle, Green grabbed the PPD officer’s flashlight and struck him with it in the head.

The violent altercation continued as another PPD officer approached to attempt to help. During the struggle Green wrestled with the officer and items came off the officer's belt. Green was able to pick up the flashlight from the ground and raised it toward the PPD officer. The officer fired multiple times, striking Green.

Lifesaving measures were attempted and EMS responded. They transported Green to a local hospital. Despite efforts he was pronounced deceased at 10:45 p.m.

The officer involved in the incident sustained an injury to his head and was treated at a local hospital. He was released and is expected to fully recover.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel, and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings, which take several weeks to complete.

Upon completion, the findings will be presented to the Crawford County Attorney’s Office for determination of charges. The investigation remains ongoing.

In 1983, Ted Garner was convicted of first-degree murder in the disappearance of Frederick Iwert. Despite the case being prosecuted and receiving a conviction, Iwert's remains were never found. This is only the second case where a person was convicted of a murder without a body in Kansas.

Mighty Neighborly: A True Story of the Fredrick Iwert Murder is a book recounting the events leading to Iwert's disappearance and the trial that followed. Author Debbie Gassert was generous to present a copy of her book to the KBI.

The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) requested KBI assistance at approximately 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 2. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

On Monday, June 1, at approximately 10:33 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 3400 block of Bell Crossing Drive after a report that a family member, identified as Jorge Arellano, 32, of Kansas City, Kansas, was experiencing a mental health crisis. Upon arrival, officers encountered Arellano on the roof of the residence armed with a knife. Officers were able to de-escalate the situation, and Arellano put down the knife and climbed down from the roof. Officers cleared the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m.

At approximately 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, a second 911 call was received from the same residence reporting that Arellano was again in crisis and armed with a knife. While responding to the call, a third call was received at approximately 1:15 a.m., reporting that Arellano had forced entry into the basement of the home.

Officers arrived at approximately 1:20 a.m. and gave commands for Arellano to exit the residence. Arellano again climbed onto the roof of the home, this time armed with multiple knives. Preliminary information indicates, with a knife in his hand, Arellano began making throwing motions in the direction of officers and family members from the roof. At that time, one KCKPD officer discharged their firearm, striking Arellano one time.

Medical aid was rendered at the scene, and Arellano was transported to a Kansas City area hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

It does not represent final or thorough findings, which take several weeks to complete.

The investigation remains ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney for review.
