On March 18, members of the Governor’s Behavioral Health Services Planning Council toured the new mental health facility under construction at the Shawnee County Jail.

Brian Cole, Director of Shawnee County Corrections, and his staff provided a detailed presentation on the comprehensive mental health programs offered through the county’s contract with VitalCore. They also outlined ongoing initiatives to reduce the existing waiting lists for competency evaluations and restoration services, underscoring the county’s commitment to improving timely access to essential behavioral health support for justice-involved individuals.

Additionally, John Agnew presented Cindy Sherlock with the Victor Fitz Peer Excellence Award at the Region VII Peer Summit in October in recognition of her outstanding contributions.

On February 27th, Chairman Wes Cole represented the Council as part of a group that met with Governor Laura Kelly to sign a proclamation designating March as Problem Gambling Month in Kansas. This proclamation has been a goal of the KDADS Problem Gambling Team and the Council’s Problem Gambling Subcommittee for some time.
