After a thoughtful selection process that included feedback from families, staff, and community members, Toppen*sh School District hiring committees have recommended the continuation of Mrs. Patty Diaz’s contract as principal of Garfield Elementary. Mrs. Diaz was selected to serve as the Interim Principal of Garfield for the 2025-2026 school year and will continue serving in this leadership role as principal of Garfield Elementary moving forward.

Mrs. Diaz has dedicated 30 years to education, serving students and families in a variety of instructional and leadership roles centered around literacy, equity, and student success. She began her career as a bilingual teacher and a Reading Recovery teacher in Pasco before continuing her work in Colorado. Upon returning to Washington, she served as an ELL Coordinator in the Yakima School District, supporting English language learners and educators.

For the past 20 years, Mrs. Diaz has proudly served Toppen*sh School District in numerous leadership roles, including reading coach, State and Federal Programs Director, Early Learning Center Director, principal of Lincoln Elementary, and most recently prior to becoming the Interim Principal, as the district’s curriculum director.

A proud Toppen*sh graduate, Mrs. Diaz has deep roots in the community and has raised three children who attended Toppen*sh schools. Her passion for building strong relationships and ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive continues to guide her work each day.

“I’m excited to announce that I will continue as Garfield’s principal,” shared Mrs. Diaz. “Thank you for your support throughout this year. Your words of encouragement during the hiring process are so appreciated. Together, we will continue to make Garfield a great place to learn and grow.”

Outside of school, Mrs. Diaz enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, reading, and taking walks with her Goldendoodle, Max.

Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Diaz as she continues serving the Garfield Elementary community. 👏

Kirkwood Elementary School’s 1st Grade fundraiser brought plenty of smiles this year with their “Tattoo a Teacher” event! Students purchased temporary tattoos and got to choose teachers to wear them for the day, leading to lots of laughs, fun, and school spirit across campus. In its very first year, the fundraiser raised $100, and the team is already excited to make it even bigger next year!

What a creative way to bring students and staff together! We are 🐾
