Please accept our sincere gratitude for the tremendous support you all recently provided for one of our fallen comrades. Even though our hearts are broken, our flags are lowered, and our prayers are lifted, we still thought there was much we could do to express to Robert "Bob" Phiel's family our appreciation for his service to our department. Today, we decorated the trucks in his honor. Each and every individual he's helped during his time in service will miss him greatly. Captain Phiel, our brother, You will always remain on our minds and in our hearts. We've decorated these vehicles in your honor today because we know you'll be keeping an eye on us all while we continue to answer these calls and provide the services you so dearly enjoyed.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you about the passing of Topsail Beach firefighter Robert "Bob" Phiel. He passed away last night in his sleep. Bob was a volunteer firefighter with Topsail Beach for 16 years, and he served as a captain for six of those years. Bob was a devoted member of our department, always going above and beyond what was asked of him for the safety of his fellow brothers and sisters. He bettered the department, putting the department and its members first no matter what. Bob loved the fire service and being part of Topsail Beach. He will certainly be missed by our department, the fire service, the community, and his family. Please keep his wife and family in your thoughts and prayers. You can rest easy now brother; we got it from here.

Good evening,

We are excited to share with our community and the surrounding communities the training we go through to gain additional knowledge, adapt to ever-changing environments, strengthen our vital skills, and prepare for or anticipate situations that may arise. Your dedicated firefighters meet twice a month to train, ensuring that we are providing efficient, quick, and safe services to our district. Last night, firefighters met for training on the new windows that have become part of the new building code on the island. These windows, called Ocean View High Performance Windows by Viwinco, are constructed of a vinyl frame with no grids. They are double-glazed windows infused with argon that are impact-resistant and can withstand up to 150 mph winds. They have an energy performance rating U-factor of 0.28 and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.20. Additionally, they are rated for 0.46 visible transmittance. These windows are certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). We were given one of these windows and were able to not only conduct a thorough class on it but also visualize how this product will perform during firefighter operations. Due to the new windows, we have purchased a new blade for our K12 saw that is specifically designed to help gain access if needed.
