It has been my honor to serve Topsfield as one of its representatives on the Masconomet Regional School Committee since the fall of 2014, being a strong proponent of public education and of community service. We've lived here since 2012, fulfilling my wife Catherine MacLean Hodges' long-term wish to move back to the town in which she grew up. I must admit that at first I didn't understand why, but that changed as quickly as our boxes were unpacked. Topsfield is a special place, because of its people, and my love for this town and my desire to serve it has only grown since then. Our son Jack is a 2021 Masco graduate, and our daughter MacLean is in the 8th grade.
By trade I am a management consultant, helping both public and private sector organizations execute their strategy better. During former Gov. Deval Patrick's administration, I helped develop the integrated strategy and measures for his "Close Achievement Gap" education priority, working with leadership of the Executive Office of Education as well as the Departments of Elementary and Secondary Education, Early Education and Care, Higher Education, and the University of Massachusetts. I have a BA from Harvard University and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.
I have served in a number of roles on the Masconomet Regional School Committee, including Chair, and also the Budget, Community Relations, Policy, Collective Bargaining, and the Anti-Racism Subcommittees. I also served as Chair of the Start Times Advisory Committee.
Serving on the school committee has never been more challenging as it has been since March 2020, but there's no place that I'd rather be. With always imperfect information and ever-changing guidance from the state, we have done our best to keep students and staff safe while providing the best education that we can. I think I can safely say that no decision that we've made has been liked by all or even most of our constituents. Nonetheless, I didn't run for office to make friends, but to make a difference. And I think we're doing that, as we learn what works and what doesn't and improve each and every day.
Masco is a great place, but that doesn't mean it can't get even better. I serve for our kids, ALL of our kids, that they would have the best education that we can afford, and that Masco is a place where all students and staff feel safe and accepted.
Thank you for your support.
