Like today’s hot August days, residents in 1817 flocked to the ocean for relief from the heat. But that summer, something else was drawing people to the water.

Dozens reported seeing an enormous serpent-like creature, particularly in Gloucester Harbor. Witnesses described a dark, unusually long body rising above the surface in a series of humps—almost like a row of barrels moving through the water.

The sightings caused a sensation, attracting curious onlookers and investigators alike. More than two centuries later, no one knows for certain what they saw. Sea serpent, whale, shark—or something else entirely—the Gloucester Sea Serpent remains one of Cape Ann’s most enduring maritime mysteries.

And in 1817, Rockport and Gloucester were still one community. Rockport would not become a separate town until 1840, making this a story shared by both communities.
